SubGenius Java IRC

A basic, bare-bones edition of a Java-based IRC client for Web browsers can be found on my personal Web site at:

http://www.tiac.net/users/modemac/irc

And yes, I agree: Java sucks.

HOWEVER, a majority of newcomers to the Net are using Java...because they don't know any better. Therefore, a Java-based "chat room" is now an ideal way to entice newbies and newcomers to join us on the Sunday evening IRC Devivals (as well as during the rest of the week). Once they arrive, we can then help them to escape the trap of Java, and try out other options.

Besides, it's better to point browsers in the direction of the IRC Devivals, which are *already* popular and accessible to nearly anyone, rather than try to host a Java-based "chat room" like those other Web sites do.

Drawback #1: The Java applet is unregistered. I'll probably cough up the cash to register it if it proves to be reasonably successful.

Drawback #2: The subgenius.net crew is still trying to promote itself on IRC #subgenius.

Try out the Java client, and post your flames here. Don't email me about this, because I'd rather have it all done here in public for everyone to see...especially those of you with more knowledge of Java than I have. -- First Online Church of "Bob" http://www.modemac.com/
