There used to be a tv commercial for some group - I believe it was a Peace Corps type group called Acta (?) - which involved characters from Johnny Hart's B.C. comic strip. The character named Thor is sitting on a rock passing out "jobs" to everyone who approaches. The character Peter comes up singing: "I'll take Manhattan...." to which the Thor character replies: "He'll take Afghanistan...." (sorry if I mixed up the characters' names). I just think it weirdly "prophetic" that a commercial from the 70s would juxtapose Manhattan & Afghanistan.

One day photographic recall of commercials will be a useful skill!

It was "ACTION". They sang Bing Crosby's alphabet song "A, you're
Adorable, B, you're so Beautiful..." etc., only spelling out ACTION. I can
remember some of the commercial:

I, our Ideals are high,
O, oughtn't you apply,
N, means its Now that we need you.
A, C, T, I, we could go on all day.
O, N, here's why
Volunteers are needed right away.

Then the announcer said some stuff, ending with "Get into ACTION."

: The character Peter comes up singing: "I'll
: take Manhattan...." to which the Thor character replies: "He'll take
: Afghanistan...."

"You'll" not "He'll". And Afghanistan was pronounced in a whiny
voice, with 5 syllables, "A-fuh-ga-nuh-staaaan!"

I guess I'm partly there...
