Hick-Hop Blends Bluegrass and Rap

WHITESBURG, Ky. -- Some call the unusual blend of rural and urban music
hillbilly hip-hop. Others call it hick-hop.

The collaboration of banjos, fiddles and drums set to a beat that would
leave a rapper out of breath was created to reach inmates from big
cities who are in rural Appalachian prisons.

Nick Szuberla, director of an eastern Kentucky radio show that caters to
those inmates, brought bluegrass and hip-hop musicians together in
Whitesburg earlier this month for a live performance on WMMT-FM. Dirk
Powell, a banjo picker from Oberlin, Ohio, and Danja Mowf, a hip-hop
artist from Richmond, Va., created music that lends itself to both
clogging and break dancing.

I had a dream about this last year. The boys dress in overalls and
white shirts and the girls dress in thin cotton print dresses with
little black strap shoes. Except in my dream they called it
"Responsabilly" because the songs were about having positive values
in your life.

Blending hip-hop and clog-dancing is like making a smoothie of castor oil &
road kill.

Goddamnit, if THAT shit catches on, I WILL go deeply insane. Clog dancing is a
physical version of Tourette's Syndrome, except the victims LIKE their condition
and want to pass it on to YOU. Watching that assholian twitching is like being
subjected to a low frequency at a high enough amplitude that your bowels start
to loosen. You'll have your hands around someone's throat before you can say
"Hoss, LEAVE them cows alone!"

FIGHT THEM! FIIIIGHT THEEEEMMMM!!!!

If there is, in fact, a Heaven and a Hell,
all we know for sure is that Hell will be
a viciously overcrowded version of Phoenix...

This reminds me of the time that one of the extremely Polish girls in
the extended family married some hill billy about an hour south of
here. All the Polish relatives came to the wedding expecting a Polka
band, and there was naught but a hillbilly band there. You shoulda
heard them try to knock out a Polka as they damn near picketed the place
and stomped out, and I don't mean a-stompin' the good way, there was
practically a riot there. You simply cannot roll out the barrel polka
on a banjo no matter how you try. C/W and Frankie Yankovic mix is just
not physically possible. But I suppose the "next" big thing will try to
combine the two in the future, just like Appalachian Hip/Hop.
