Thanksgiving 01

I'm not dead and I've had a great holiday, working. Prior to that I had to deal with computer and loved one repair. To help with the repair of my loved one, I went back home, to the remote cattle ranch in North Texas owned by my parents and siblings. Despite these setbacks, I have not let "Bob" down. Wel maybe "Bob" has a complaint, but I am satisfied thsat I did my best meeting our most immediate deadlines.

JOBS FINISHED:

Princess Wei R. Doe's 2002 Connietite Calendar cheesecake photo (less special effects than previous calendar pics because the place we shot it at, at Burning Man, was itself one huge special effect)

The 2001 SubGenius Beefcake Calendar shot of yours truly -- 99 percent special effects, featuring the new Giant 4' Size WhyAskWhyAskWhy Sacred Church Armory Full Metal Dobbshead... the only prop large enough to cover my dicks for decency's sake

Hours of Slack 811, 812 and 813

811 was assembled at my parents' house in Bumfuck, Texas using Mammy's boom box and Pappy's CDs, and the prior week's ESO Swamp Radio show. ON CASSETTE! Like in the Day. The two year ago Day.

812 is a "normal" show made from diverse sources, a.b.s. samples and ESO shows and etc., mixed digitally -- see Log.

813 is the first time I've used a Lymph Node Institute show from WREK Atlanta to catch up. The whole show is a direct copy of their CD of their show, with an intro and outro by me added, shifting all attention to the Home SubG Business.

I also took advantage of a temporary equipment loan (ACE's DV camera) and transfered the analog video masters of some of our videotapes to digital versions. Then I experimented (for days) with compression methds to see what generally worked best for converting these high-res videos to web and Internet use, balancing file size against pic and sound quality.

I finally learned some video editing programs. It's been geek heaven. Learning new skills is my next favorite path to Slack besides air, water, sleep and food. And kissing on Miss Wei. And, see, I used to make my living as a film and video editor. For years I have edited audio for FUN, a la Hour of Slack, and I have even had the rre chance to edit video for fun, a la ARISE. But film and video editing gear used to be prohibitively expensive to own. Any FUN film or video work I had to do, I always slipped in on the sly or after hours using the bossman's equipment. This usually meant going without sleep, which I cannot any longer do.

My idea of moving picture editing was Moviola based. UPRIGHT Moviolas, not flatbeds. Upright moviolas are those tractor-like machines you see in old movies in the "cutting room" scenes. They're made of machined steel parts that pull delicate sprocketed film at high speeds over a baffling array of loops. Later in my career we moved up to the flatbed style of machine, where the film is on horizontally stored spools.

One's biggest concern during the finishing stages of editing was that the film print itself wouldn't fall to pieces.

During the last few years, film and tape cutting moved over to computer land, and so did I, but not for film and video cutting. My computer gear wasn't anywhere near good enough... 60 gigabyte hard drives and 400 mhz processors were ony for rich folks or hustling, bustling companies. Now that stuff's in the used bins at drugstores.

I KNEW that when I finally started editing at home, on my computer, I wouldn't be able to stop.

I haven't been able to stop.

That's why I dropped off of alt.slack. Actually at first it was because I suddenly had to leave town -- my mother got very sick and was in the intensive care ward. Now she's home and recuperating. But when I got back to the World, I... I fucked with the editing programs. First iMovie then Final Cut Pro. I haven't even started to look at the Boris filters yet, and After Effects. If I do, my old Internet friends might never see me again.

I like editing. I LOVE editing my own stuff. If I was getting paid to do Hour of Slack and these SubG vids they would be 10 times more layered than they are now.
