There is a movie called The Stepford Wives which has
become a cult classic.
If you've never seen it, you still probably know that
it is a reference to
brainwashing and replacing people with docile look-alike
animatronics. A
while ago The Lord and I sat down to watch this movie
and see what all the
fuss is about.
It's an unusual movie because it is a horror flick aimed
at women in
particular. And the horror doesn't come from a psychotic
guy with a
chainsaw, in fact there is no bloodshed in the movie
at all. A happy New
York City couple, a male businessman and a female photographer,
and their
children move to a big house in the suburbs. They can't
believe what a
great deal they got on this house!
You can tell from their conversations that this is thoroughly
modern and hep
seventies family. The wife doesn't wear dresses or
bras and she has
important work of her own. She doesn't cook, she makes
TV dinners!
Everyone smokes like hell, drinks cocktails starting
at lunch, and nobody
pays any attention to the kids. Progress! America!
Things start to go wrong when her husband joins the
local businessmens'
club. He tells her he's sorry about it, but this backwards
suburban club
doesn't allow women -- does she mind if he joins? They
laugh about these
silly hick customs and she tells him go ahead and join,
it will be good for
business. The night after his initiation she finds
him sitting in an
armchair getting thoroughly drunk, white as a sheet,
obviously deeply
shaken. He looks at her kind of funny but tells her
he's ok.
Soon after that, she starts to notice that all the other
women in town
aren't just backward hicks. It's like they're not even
human! She tries to
host a consciousness-raising feminist meeting, but all
the other wives will
talk about are recipes and cleaning! Then one by one,
her few feminist
friends, all newcomers to the town like herself, go
off for "weekend trips"
with their husbands. When they come back, their breasts
are huge, they wear
dresses instead of slacks, they quit their jobs, and
all they do all day is
cook, clean, and service their husbands.
Eventually she discovers the truth -- the Stepford Men's
Club is murdering
women and replacing them with animatronic robots created
by an evil
ex-Disney employee. All the men in town, including
the police, are in on
it. And now it's her turn. And despite her expert
weilding of a fireplace
poker, she fails to escape the town and is captured,
murdered, and replaced
with a robot. The End.
The basic horror of this movie is that all of our progress
as women has been
just an illusion. Even the most sophisticated and modern
man still wishes
deep down that we would serve him docilely, while wearing
enormous breasts.
The horror is the thought that if he had the chance
to do it without being
caught, any man would replace us with a sex/cooking
slave robot in a
heartbeat. He might agonize over it for a night, but
in the end he'd do it,
because women don't have value as individual people.
Their value is in what
they do for their men, so it's ok to kill them as long
as you replace them
right away.
Once you've seen this movie, a lot of other movies look
different to you,
especially movies from the seventies when feminism was
concentrating on the
real world and hadn't moved out to the movies yet.
Remember in the Planet
of the Apes, how Charleton Heston finds love in the
arms of a mute, docile
degenerate human girl? And he's not just making the
best of a bad situation
either, as is clear from the way he pats her face as
they ride off into the
sunset just before discovering the awful truth about
the ape planet. That
gentle face-pat is Heston's way of saying "Well,
at least it's not ALL bad!
Sure, the planet's run by dirty apes but at least the
broads can't bitch at
you."
Now the Stepford Wives is just a movie. It's not real.
But when I see a
bunch of men who regularly mock everything religious
from Scientology to
Catholicism suddenly rise up in arms to defend Islam,
the most repressive
religion on earth today in terms of women's rights,
that movie sure comes to
mind. I see men go straight from making fun of the
Pope's hats to saying
"Hey, Islam isn't all bad, lots of women LIKE being
treated that way," and
"You're a bigot for believing all those lies about
the way Islamic women are
treated, they are only treated badly in tiny sects of
Islam." It makes me
think that underneath everything you say you believe
in about freedom, you
still wish the world was full of bitches with huge tits
who were silent,
cooked right, and pleasured you on demand.

You are of course entirely right. I find myself thinking
about the
world far too often (especially if something like Magdalen

Arabs gets me on the subject), then getting annoyed,
