Sun's rays to roast Earth as poles flip

Earth's magnetic field - the force that protects us
from deadly radiation bursts from outer space - is
weakening dramatically.

Scientists have discovered that its strength has
dropped precipitously over the past two centuries
and could disappear over the next 1,000 years.

The effects could be catastrophic. Powerful radiation
bursts, which normally never touch the atmosphere,
would heat up its upper layers, triggering climatic
disruption. Navigation and communication satellites,
Earth's eyes and ears, would be destroyed and
migrating animals left unable to navigate...

Oh.

Does this mean we can start using aerosols again?

No, but it will be used to explain why the Dept. of
Homeland Security is confiscating all magnets and
compasses.

Right. there is little evidence that previous pole reversals
coorelate with mass extinctions. However, even if a LOT of a population
suddenly died, it might not make that much of a splash in the fossile
record. Imagine 50% of humans died over a 1000 year period. How would
that really look 50,000 years later? It might not be obvious at all.

We're guessing at this point, but predictions of doom are always
damned entertaining to read.
