Nascent Racism in DC

So, all of a sudden, it's national news that a handful of people have
been offed over a two week period. Check it out. 242 homicides in DC
last year. Pretty close to one a day no matter how you look at it. And
I'm sure they don't close schools in the 'hood or cry terrorist there,
where this has been pretty much business as usual forever. I mean,
statistically, everybody in the DC area is no more likely now than ever
to get a cap in their ass. Nobody wringing their hands three weeks ago
about "will death strike again".

It just brings me to wonder what is so special about Mr. Sniper and his
victims. I mean there must be 75 porch monkeys a year offed in drive
bys that don't even make the local papers. Or is it because this guy is
striking at people who, like, can afford cars and to buy gas, unlike the
folks who allegedly are too lazy to break out of their poverty and move
somewhere safer?

Or is it the lack of apparent motive? I mean, no drug deals, no gang
shootings, no robbery, no heat of passion. I guess people living in the
suburbs are actively doing all the right things so as not to get offed,
as opposed to the inner city dwellers whose raucous and undisciplined
behavior somehow earns them their early demise in great numbers.

I guess I don't get it. Unless it's fear of some evil that leaked out
of the central city where homicide is expected to be contained. Why
would they cancel soccer tournaments and walk zig-zaggy across shopping
mall parking lots any more now than ever? Just take the 911 calls and
throw the paperwork on top of the stack of previous unsolved killings
and go about your business.

Then again, perhaps it's simply that the sniper has exceeded some
unspoken bag limit. My sense of it is, if you climb over 5, especially
in 5 separate events, the old notorious hackle starts to rise.

Still seems odd that the first 242 homicides didn't get the attention
that the last couple handsfulls have. Nevertheless, I hope they get the
guy, and lock him in with the American Taliban. He's prolly a raghead
anyhow, they way they're treating it.
