We checked with some lightning monitoring sites and there stations and
at that time there was no lightning within 300 miles of our location.
We were talking about the rumbling that went on for at least ten minutes
that night... until I found the link, I didn't know what time it was
when it happened. It was right before my daughters bedtime which
technically is 8PM Eastern. I was taking out the trash, heard the low
growl and even mentioned it to my wife and daughter. It wasn't
electricity, no sparks, not thunder.... To deep to have been a jet
plane. I don't know anything other than the times match. I sent an
E-mail to the USGS... be interesting to see what they say if they answer
my letter.

I didn't think so either! Crazy huh? I'm in Georgia in the Atlanta
suburbs. Almost exactly opposite the epicenter. I probably wouldn't have
notice had I not been outside. And I'm still waiting to hear from the
USGS to see if anyone else has reported something similar. I'm very
sensitive to that X-Files type magic shit but I'm not going to compare
it to Obi-Wan sensing the destruction of Alderan... No, it was most
definitely a sound, a really low rumble that lasted for some time. I got
some e-mails from friends in Florida that think they heard it too.
I'm crazy but not that kind of crazy!

Speed of sound = 340.29 meters a second
1/2 circumference of earth =
20,000,000 meters
Maybe I suck at math but I think this means
it would take 16 hours for the sound to travel
halfway across the planet. I'm ready to accept
a doublecheck on the math here.
Maybe it was one of those plane/helicopter
hybrid thingies I saw all over GA last time I was

have been a frontal system thunderhead.

Yeah, we had thunder here, too.
But I'd rather believe that it was the earthquake.
And I really suck at maths!
So, maybe the shock wave went through the Earth instead
of through the air. And sound/shock/vibes go faster through
liquids and solids than through air. Thus, if the circumference
is about 40,000 meters, and pi are square, one half pi d=
the same as circumference divided by one half pi d, where
d is the sliding delta, and g = the specific gravity minus the
viscosity factored for temperature of the creamy nougat filling.
So, at that rate, it was either thunder and/or the shock wave.
But what will transubstantiate the validity of either hypothesis
is actual seismo drum paper with time and temperature alternately
blinking, thus proving who knew what and when did they know it.

Thank you Professor Corey! But I believe that your theory would
be more homogeneous if you had accounted for Denuded Delibrium,
not to mention Intoxiqatl's Constant, which you did not mention.
As I'm sure you will find from Einstein's Spline, where sine times 9
is the depth of the Rhine, a shock wave can pass through ten feet of
gas, but hardly an inch through pine.
Example:
There once was a quake in Nantucket
So the town's people hid in a bucket
When all's said and done
It wasn't much fun
And they renamed the place to Phucket

No no .. That's the speed of sound in air. First, it was a shock wave.
Second, it was travelling through the earth. Shock waves travelling through
earth travel *much* faster than that sounds travels through air. Look at the
speed of the Tsunami travelling through water. Hundreds of miles per hour.
Being on the exact opposite of the epicenter might mean that spot was the
only one to hear it. Imagine all thouse waves travelling all across the
entire face of the earth, and meeting up again at the anti-epicenter. Boom!

If that was what we heard... I wonder if it came through the atmosphere?
I don't think sound waves could travel that far in air, in fact I'm sure
they can't. If it came along the surface why didn't we feel it? It was
powerful enough to disrupt the entire planet, that we know from the
other links posted to alt.slack. It either loosened our local faults
here and that's what we heard or it traveled THROUGH the planet.

I was looking online for some of the seismic sites that have the graphs
with time, so I could try to get an idea of the shock wave.

Depends. The Earth is not a unifromily dense object.
The center is either hollow and full of Nazi Demon or made of liquid iron.
Depending on whose proproganda you believe.
The Mantel is solid iron, but has fractures, fissures, and pockets on non-iron.
There is also a section that is a transition form liquid to solid.
Each of these effects the shock wave in differnent manners.
So one seismagraph station can recieve 3 to 4 sets of shock waves form the same
earthquake. By measuring the frequencies and time differance one station can
also locate the epicenter to within a few hundered miles or so.
I saw this on NOVA on PBS, so it has to be true!

I wonder what satellite infrared film of the tsunami looked like?
Since the wave was likely a bit different temperature, it probalby
showed up on heat film. You know, the moon was likely a part of
the Earth. I wonder if more pieces might fly off to become more moons.
Or the Earth could disintigrate to become another asteroid belt.
Most earthquakes begin in the lithgowsphere, and shock waves
travel through the mohel, but in the Soho the rent's too high.

With what we've been talking about on this thread... I've done a bit of
research. First off, USGS has not e-mailed me back. I'm sure they are
busy at the moment though. Or I'm just weird... but anyway, I went
through a few books at the library on acoustics and we may have very
well "felt" the reverberation. We "heard" it by vibration basically.
I've met about 25 people now that mention that they heard it too...
BEFORE I say anything to them about my experience. No one out of this
area that I've spoke with have mentioned it.
I read somewhere that worldwide clocks had to be adjusted by almost 3
seconds to compensate for the whole event. That's a thread all by itself
though. It's OK Daddy! We just time-shifted back by 3 seconds! We'll
live longer!

Funny about the clock! I was listenting to the radio today about
a new calendar that would eliminate leap year and have the days
all on the same date each year, but skip 5 days every five years,
or something like that.
USCG hasn't answered my e-mail question either,
I asked them if they've ever noticed that cows tend
to walk contour lines on steep hillsides.
I've been in earthquakes that rumble and shake,
but one in the California mountains there was just a big bang
and a thump.
One of my brothers, his pet disaster is the New Madird quake--
it changed the course of the Mississippi River-- if a similar quake
on the New Madrid fault happened today, they estimate that maybe
more than 20 million people would die!!!

Oy! the disinformation is spreading faster than huey's gf.
As I heard it, it was perhaps 3 mcroseconds. Some *are* saying there was
none at all.
*I PREDINCKT* you will see emails like this before the end of tomorrow:
FORWARD THIS TO EVERYONE ON YORE LITS!!!1
Did you know...?
- The Earthquake that caused the tsunami was equal in force to ten times the
energy released by our SUN in a whole YEAR, or more than a hundred trillion
thousand-gigaton nuculer bobms!
- The tsunami wave was so large it was visible from MARS!
- The gravitational shift was so great, that the entire milky-way galaxy is
now rotating in the OPPOSITE DIRECTION! and that the space-time continuum
was altered so extensively, scientists believe that it has created 36
additional alternate universes!
- The island of Sumatra was moved 150 miles by the force!
- ...And so on until you weep for humanity.
Mark my words.
Heh. "bobms".

The AMOUNT of time is insignificant... whatever the amount was they
atomic clocks WERE reset. Which is scary!

Either way, whether milliseconds or seconds. it did effect the planet
large scale. CNN reported last night that parts of Sumatra moved across
the planets surface more than 90 feet and that maps of the area will
have to be redrawn.

The key words in that article are "may have";
"theorized"; "may reveal" and "not actually that
precise" and "[unable] to prove it."
Another scientist may have theorized that the earth
may theoretically spin 1/10,000 of a second SLOWER
perhaps to the quake (but maybe wasn't actually being
that precise), but he, too, did not have the instrumentation
and calculations to prove it. Fox news reported this one.
The two competing theories MAY prove to cancel
each other out (theoretically).
MY theory, which may contain some truth (but I do not
have specific calculations to prove it) is that this may be
a large volume of common gas with a temperature
that exceeds the theoretical average of such gas measured
by instrumentation which I do not actually
have in studies that I didn't do -- but I'm not being precise.

well any time there's a big natural disaster, the revelations
christians come out of the woodwork. Cause in the End Times, there
will be FIRES, AND FLOODS, AND EARTHQUAKES, AND FAMINES, AND OTHER
DISASTERS. IT IS WRITTEN!
So, every time there's a fire, or a flood, or an earthquake, or a
famine, or an other disaster, somewhere, they are all like "SEE, THE
SIGNS OF THE END TIMES!"
I bet I could google *christian* usenet groups for this and there'd be
dozens of them a'preachin' and a'prophesyin'
On the other hand, if you believe in omens, a huge natural disaster
originating in the underworld, coming right after the winter solstice,
would be a very dire omen for next year. Powers of darkness defeating
the light and stuff.
