GyeeeeHaaawwwwww!!

The Northridge Quake was a great ride! We were living about two miles
due west of Northridge Hospital at the time. I remember waking up more
or less in midair and hearing glass breaking all over the apartment. My
wife started to panic and bolt, so I pinned her down on the bed and kept
an eye on the window air conditioner I had just installed two days
earlier -- to see if it was coming in or going out.

We evacuated to the parking lot, and on the way out we could see trailer
parks on fire all around. We could also see the glow of the fire'n'water
spectacle up in Granada Hills. Our apartment manager tucked tail and ran
to her mother's, so I got a wrench from my toolbox, hit all the gas
shutoffs around the building, and pulled all the circuit breakers.

After it had quieted down a bit, I went up to get my sterno stove and
some coffee. Damned if the paperboy hadn't delivered the Daily News. I
can still picture some poor kid in shock running his route like a zombie
for lack of a better idea or saner impulse...

The aftershocks were the real bitch to deal with. They kept messing with
our heads for months.

Ah well. I'll be off in a bit to top off the gas tank in the car. We
still have a generator and other stuff from my pre-Y2K shopping spree,
and I'm also in the habit of keeping a five gallon can of stabilized gas
on hand. Good time to stock up on canned goods too.

And AMMO. PraBob!
