Man Shot to Death Outside Ore. Store

By TYPH TUCKER
The Associated Press
Thursday, December 23, 2004; 2:44 PM

PORTLAND, Ore. - A man who witnesses say was panhandling outside a busy downtown
department store was shot to death Thursday in front of horrified holiday shoppers.
A suspect was quickly arrested. Witnesses said the gunman fired three shots at the victim,
then calmly walked away.

Police said the motive for the shooting was not immediately known.

KPAM radio reported that witnesses said the victim had been panhandling in front of the landmark
Meier & Frank store. Sgt. Brian Schmautz, police spokesman, told The Associated Press he could
not confirm that.

Schmautz said the suspect surrendered without incident. His name was not immediately released.

The block is in the heart of downtown, just across from Pioneer Courthouse Square.
Holiday shoppers were on the streets, and a Salvation Army Santa was nearby when the shooting
occurred about 8:20 a.m.

The last fatal shooting downtown was in 2002, when a man killed a fellow methadone patient
near the same spot and was chased by a crowd of witnesses.

Every time I hear the word "panhandle" I picture some old man, really
old lookin', just standing there with a broken-off handle, like a
little curved piece of plastic, and he's just standing in the middle of
the street shaking it at people who walk by. Shaking that piece of
plastic real hard with lots of gusto and drama. And he keeps pointing
at his eye....I dunno.

"Word Detective" says that in the 1800's some beggars used real pans!
So, that's about right with the panhandle. I suppose they were suggesting
that one put food in the cooking impliment.

Maybe they could just stand on the street corner with a beer-bong,
and people could walk by and pour stuff to drink into it.

S'pose the motive was harassment?

Neurotic insecurity resulting in premeditated murder.

I knew one such psycho. He was enormous in stature.
Maybe 6'3" tall and 300 pounds and utterly terrified
that some street child might ask him for spare change.

He had never been attacked by anyone, nor had anyone
ever even been impolite to him, but the very thought
that they were *there*, just waiting for him to be
walking down the street, "minding his own business",
ready to pounce out and *ask* him for money was almost
too much for him to bear.

He ranted that they should all be arrested, transported
out of town and kept from every returning, and, if at
all possible, to be put in "camps" (his word), and shot
if they tried to leave.

I can easily imagine him (or Nenslo, for that matter)
seeing some kids or even an adult, or maybe a Salvation
Army person, outside their favored drug or health food
store, *preventing* them from going inside by victimizing
them by possibly asking them for spare change.

This enrages them so very much that they go home and get
a handgun.

When you get panhandled, offer a few of the pennies in your pocket.

The truly needy will thank you, or at least accept them without whining;
a con artist will get all pissy or start moaning about it. Then you'll
know whether you should leave 'em be or go call the cops.

I don't know about the older ones, but there is
some Slack among the youngins.

Much of the complaining about them seems to be
those who resent their living their lives like
they want to. Think about that.

If they had a CON minimum-wage job and were
living in a shitty, way-overpriced apartment,
paying half their wages to Uncle Sugar, just so
they could eat, drink beer and smoke dope, they
would be FINE, UPSTANDING CITIZENS. It's FINE
that they live their lives like they want to.

But instead, they choose to NOT do THAT kind of
work, instead of just asking people for money,
and just maybe getting enough to live on; NOT
pay Uncle Sugar for his wars; and NOT eat or
drink beer or smoke dope as much as they would
like, and, oh yes, maybe sleep in a shitty place
in a bag instead of in a shitty apartment on a
bed.

And this somehow makes them SCUM. They shouldn't
be allowed to Slack Off.

But the great irony is that for a lot of 'em,
half the time they are FINE, UPSTANDING CITIZENS
and the other half of the time they are SCUM,
just depending on things.

It all boils down to the mistaken belief that if
somebody else is fucked with, it might, in some
cosmic way, make your life a little better. That
belief is some fucked up shit.

OK, fine. One crack bum told me he'd made $400 in one day
panhandling a shopping center parking lot--

But the same crew of bums has been 86'd from several local
places, and that trespass warrants out on them so that if they
go back, they'll get a year in the county jug.

So, it would seem to be a nomadic lifestyle of necessity.

A favorite verse of mine:

Oh, could we do with this world of ours
As thy dost with the garden bowers,
Reject the weeds and keep the flowers,
What a heaven on earth we'd make it!
