Why you Must See Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou

B/C, that was iDRMRSR's choice of flick for new year's eve.
Secondly, if you ask me, the alternate title of this flick should be The
Undersea Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai.
It's practically the same flick, only at sea instead of in New Jersey. Jeff
Goldblum wears the same ridiculous eyeglasses, too.
It's a terribly clever pic, and my face hurts not from laughing, but rather
at kind of a perma-smirk at all the dry deadpan humor. Disregard any
negative reviews, and be warned that you will not find anything that makes
you laugh, but you will giggle almost continuously, especially if you are
old enough to have suffered watching any Jacques Cousteau shit in school. I
mean, it's something when a three legged dog steals the scenes.
It's hard not to totally screw up such a low key intellectual comedy. But
it's almost exactly the same movie as Buckaroo Banzai, save for the undersea
setting here on earth. Granted, there is no Dr. Lizzardo character either,
but that's not totally necessary.
Bill Murray was an excellent casting choice. It's not all about him in his
speedo and red cap, either. The ads make too much of that skimpy swimsuit
stuff. Owen Wilson even does a turn as a pipe smoking Dobbsy boy. Oddly
enough, there is an actual plot, some action, and resolution of all plot
points, too. It's not a pointless exercise in silliness by any means.
Just a dead on perfect filet-ing of Jacques Cousteau and probably every wild
animal kingdom show you've ever seen in your life from a behind the scenes
perspective, metaphorically. My organ of humor is drained and shriveled
having squirted laff-spum by the quart watching this thing.

I LIKED IT! I was one of the few in the theater who seemed to "get it." And
I found several of the moments to be laugh out loud ones. But then I liked
Ishtar too. But I am a yetiborne Subgenius.

I loved it too- and the smirking I definitely identify with. The
laughter kind of smimmers and then explodes with Aquatic. It is not a
constant slapstick (thank goodness!) Anderson writes with very clever
humor...
