Why did it "suck?" I just watched VH and enjoyed the Hell out of it!
No, it wasn't great drama, but show me a monster movie that is.

Never managed to catch "Chronos." Did see "AW Dracula" on a double bill
with his "Frankenstein." (In 3D no less). They could have kept my
money, I wanted my time back!
I think what was worse about those films was that they had the germs of
good ideas suffocated under bad filming, bad acting, bad directing and
bad editing.
I enjoyed Van Helsing, I can't stand the other two films mentioned.

How about that version of Frankenstein with Robert DeNiro as the monster?

I managed to miss that one. Kevin Branaugh (sp) was the good Doctor
wasn't he?
I did a one-act play of Frankenstein once. (Part of a four act group
that included "Dracula" "The Phantom of the Opera" and "The Hunchback
of Notre Dame") I played Frankenstein's old professor which tells you
how well this production went when you understand that I was a very
shallow 20 at the time!

Wasn't that Harvey Keitel as Judas in
The Last Temptation of Christ?
In the line of historically incongruous accents

Noooo! There's only one immortal Tony Curtis line. I think it's "Prince
Valent," but I'm certain someone here will correct me if I'm wrong;
"Yondah lies the castle of my faddah!"

I didn't mind Van Helsing, it was fun and I did like the
rendition of Frankenstien, but I think I would have
preferred that Universal went with Rudolph Grey's
treatment of all those monsters. Grey is probably
best known as Ed Wood biographer (the Johnny
Depp film was based on his Wood book, "Nightmare
of Ecstasy"). He was working on a werewolf-Dracula-
mummy-Frankenstien screenplay that I'm sure would
have been more twisted and subversive than Van
Helsing was. Hopefully he at least picked up an
option contract for his efforts. Tough going with only
one potential studio in the market.

I wasn't looking for great drama from VH. I was looking for a good monster
movie. The only good thing that came from this film is the release of the
original films on DVD as part of the promotion.
I hated...hated Van Helsing.

Just finished watching it. Loved Mr. Hyde! Werewolves Werewelldone! The
whole 007 "Q" thing with the inventions was good, too. Overall an 9.2
for an action flick.
I didn't get how pumping Frankenstein's Monster full of lightning would
give Dracula's weird pod creatures any benefit, but it was late, and I
think I dozed through some of the middle bit (between the inventions and
the horse-drawn carriage).
Did I miss something about why Dracula kept calling VH "Gabriel" at the
end?

Ooops, maybe the 9.2 was a little high, or I was...
But Mr Hyde _was_ great!!
