Mental Illness as a Technology (And Vice Versa--the radio program
hosted by multimedia artist Andrew Octopus--is for anyone who has ever
dreamed of hip-hop obsessed with time travel and spaceships, backwoods
christians working to legalize hemp, file sharers as freedom fighters.
We know that people whom society calls 'crazy' simply have the next
level of mental software (sometimes a little buggy) going on in their
skulls. We know that time travel is possible and the future of rap is
MCs who can rap in more than one language. We are post-copyright
heretics influenced by Hakim Bey and DJ Whoo Kid as well as Larry Flynt
and Ani Difranco .

Check out the show every week, uploaded every Tuesday morning, at

that's one way of looking at it.

another way is: people whom society calls "crazy" are damaged in a way
that keeps them from playing the primate social game as well as everyone
else. sociopaths who hurt, maim or kill people because they don't feel
compassion for their victims, or guilt for their crimes. schizophrenics
who can't tell their delusions from the real world. paranoids who see
threats where there are none, and who take action to protect themselves
from those threats.

there's a whole bunch of them. i'd say "collect the entire set!", but
it's not as funny when you're forced to deal with them. there are very
few ways of breaking a person's mind that convey any kind of advantage
within the primate social game.

Of course, there is really no such thing as "society". So it is
actually about individuals calling other individuals crazy. And the
question is--who are the individuals who are "qualified" to do the
labelling?

I'll tell you this, though--most of the truly innovative and important
things in human history have occurred well outside the then-limits of
the "primate social game". The world owes the "crazy" people who forced
it to accomodate new viewpoints a bigger debt than could ever be
repaid.

When the people are compressed, truncated, amputated, or otherwise
distorted to fit within the frame, rather than the frame expanding to
allow radically different models of thought and action (not necessarily
supporting, but at least allowing without interference or restriction),
you end up with the system we have today. And anyone who is heavily
invested in this system, and sees no potential or reason for change, is
truly ill.

You are not mentally ill! You are...eh, how you say...
in clinical terms... full of shit as a Christmas turkey!

So that's what Hunter S. Thompson's wife said that tipped him over into
pulling the trigger. Everyone has the special phrase that does in the
last straw. Friends, I give you "The Manchurian Gadfly."

Finally, the Church of the Subgenius is revealed as the boogzy
CIA-operated front group it's long been rumored to be. With
freethinkers like this, who needs fundamentalists?

Then again, an answer is just a question's way of making more
questions.

Ah, youth. (sighs and rocks gently in the golden sunset, reminiscing)
