Carl Sandburg never hit me as a racist sort, but he seems to be walking a
fine line with this particular little ditty. Guess we should give him the
benefit of the doubt. White supremacist poet - must be part of the KKK's
new community outreach program intended to reach today's young sensitive
racists just coming up.

I think he was honest, it's sincere. But too, even tho it's
honest empathy, some might be offended.

My buddy was one of just a few White people going to
Howard U one year. So, he invited me to come hear
Stokely Carmichael speak. We were the only White faces
out of maybe 1,200 Blacks. So, Stokely said before he started
"I'm going to ask you two white guys to leave, this ain't your
struggle." So we left. Nobody hooted or hollered. It's like that.
It was a slick move, too, to seal solidarity. But shit, like there
weren't any snitches in the crowd? Feh!

Although Sandburg might be honest and sincere, you cain't say
unless you been there. Fuck it, I like his poem anyway.

When I was in my first and pretty much only year of college, the
writing teacher told us to write a poem, and this is what I turned in:

When I was young
I ate niggers

Now I am liberal
Thank you, God

Seriously. And the teacher called me in after class and, no shit, told
me that on account of that poem, he felt I had a lot of potential as a
for-real writer!

He was a long haired liberal type at the huge Texas state college in
Austin. Jesus, I guess ANYBODY can get a job teaching bullshit at
college.

Yeah but better not step out of line and challenge official university dogma
with references to "little Eichmanns" or women's aptitude for science.
(unless you plan to write a book and need the publicity) Telling a woman
she might have a different physiological profile from a man may make her
break down and run from the room crying.
