Immigration to deport 104-year-old: report
Refugee advocate Marion Le has criticised the Immigration Department over
its treatment of a 104-year-old Chinese woman who is reportedly facing
deportation from Australia.

Cui Yu Hu has been living in Melbourne for 10 years with her only family.

On her 104th birthday she received letters of congratulations from the Prime
Minister and the Victorian Premier, but it is reported she has now been
refused an aged-parent visa.

Ms Le says she is been appalled at some recent immigration decisions.

"It seems as though commonsense as much as compassion has gone out of the
door," she said.

"I mean the case of this Chinese old lady is just clearly ludicrous.

"If The Age [newspaper] has got it right and she's been here for 10 years
and then we're suddenly saying we're going to deport a woman at that age,
particularly when the Prime Minister has congratulated her."

The paper reports that Mrs Hu does not have a home in China and has outlived
her friends and family from Xinjiang province.

The Immigration Department letter reportedly said she could appeal to the
Migration Review Tribunal.
