I suspect he had a gift for highlighting the
blindingly obvious moral of the low rent morality
play, which made 95% of everybody shrug because
they'd figured that out in elementary school, and
left the remaining 5% utterly in awe because their
morality stopped developing in elementary school.
Take for example "The Crucible". Its big message
was "you shouldn't just go around killing people."
Oh, sure, you can read more into it than that. In
fact, that's what the other 95% *had* to do, because
otherwise the moral lesson was on a par with "Don't
stab your hand with a fork 'cause it hurts."
In a way, such underdeveloped thought is sort of
a Zen koan, like "what is the sound of one hand
clapping?", except it's a do-it-yourselfer. Like
picking random words and telling people they *mean*
something, if they can just figure it out.
"Bicycle Maryland, duck squish tabernacle fnord!"
And the 5% are utterly in awe. For them it is a
revelation. They could never imagine something that
is so *deep* and meaningful, except when they smoke
marijuana.
And English teachers across the nation say to their
classes: "And what do you think he meant by that?
What are the deeper meanings to his use of the
expression "duck squish?"
And the 95% have to come up with something, or else
they get another "F" in English.
