DEEP in the basement of a dusty university library
in Edinburgh lies a small black box, roughly the size
of two cigarette packets side by side, that churns
out random numbers in an endless stream.

At first glance it is an unremarkable piece of
equipment. Encased in metal, it contains at its
heart a microchip no more complex than the ones
found in modern pocket calculators.

But, according to a growing band of top scientists,
this box has quite extraordinary powers. It is, they
claim, the 'eye' of a machine that appears capable
of peering into the future and predicting major world
events...

The project's website, with "live" data (on a 10 minute delay):

Oooo..the colors.

Plus they're inkblotting the data graph on a horizontal axis..to make
pretty pictures.

Where's my nyquil.

But it's PREDICTIVE. A ten minute delay on a mechanism that looks four
hours into the future is TRIVIAL.

Which begs the questions: Why bother with the ten minute delay in the
first place? How the fuck do these people get PHDs? BOBDAMMIT!

Eeep! The REALLY scary thing is that I know at least two Princeton
researchers who have made a decent living off that machine. Their
explanation of it takes so long, I have a feeling even they aren't sure
what the hell it is...

So they have some 40 of these toys hooked up togther.
Now if they made anothe rof these and it matched the
first one, I might be impressed.

I, for one would be a lot more convinced of the ability to
predict the future if they could predict that their website
is unviewable unless you use the damn slidebar to go back
and forth across the dynamic display.
