AOL to cease Usenet access

Just logged in to alt.slack tonight - to get the following message:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------
Important Notice: AOL Newsgroup Service

From early 2005, AOL members will no longer be able to use the Newsgroup
service through AOL. You will however be able to access Usenet newsgroups via
Internet Explorer, or Google at http://groups.google.com/. For AOL
alternatives, go to AOL Keyword: Community.

We are sorry for any inconvenience.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------

Ho hum, I wonder why?...and with no explanation at all? Sadly, I can imagine
exactly why, but anyone know more - for sure?

Still - Google's OK, but unfortunately about 24 hours out of date, so not quite
the same for getting the Slackees response to earth-shaking events - such as
9-11, where alt.slack's general level of posting was about 1000000% superior to
most other Internet-based comment (most US-based opinion being of the "Nuke
Mecca!" variety.)

Never mind, I'll have the nice moderated world of the AOL "community" to look
forward to instead! A kind of Stepford Usenet...

AOL is downsizing. Henceforth, they will be running
all operations out of a pay phone booth.

And with DSL being fast on the download
but slow on the upload, the porn won't be
able to watch YOU.

For what you pay for AOHELL, why would the switch to
DSL be such a significant difference...

AOHELL 19.95
DSL 26.95
rent 2 less pron vids a month and download them instead...

plus you can download from such wonderful newsfroups as
a.b.s. and not have to wait....

Time-Warner has come to the conclusion that AOL is
a money-sucking parasite. They were about the last
people around to make the realization, but they have
decided to whither it away.

Maybe spin it off to somebody willing to reduce the
quality of everything it does, sort of like what
happened to Prodigy.

But this is just the first of an endless stream of
discontinued serices they will no longer offer.
They'll probably start jacking up rates, too. And
charging for everything, like the banks.

I don't know what you're talking about.
I've never met you before in my life.
That story sounds like utter bullshit.
I wasn't there and it wasn't me.
I am *not* in denial. Shut up.
