If I remember correctly, you have said that you don't like movies based
on comic books. But do me a favor, if you please, and tell Mrs. Nenslo
for me, if you happen to remember, that I think she'd appreciate
"American Splendor," the Harvey Pekar movie. In fact, she is in a
position whereby she could possibly appreciate it UNIQUELY. I hope that
you understand that although the movie is based on a comic book, it
wasn't a super hero or horror comic book. It could be called the comic
book rough equivalent of your recent paintings, and the movie is not so
much based on the comic as it is a reciprocal documentary part of the
ongoing comic book autobiography. Yes, I know that sounds dull. But,
heck, you might even like the movie. There are certain aspects which
you might find amusingly familiar, or very painfully familiar, the
kinds of things you might not have expected in ANY movie. You've
probably read some reviews. The ones that said it's really good are the
objectively correct reviews.

Everybody else: notice how carefully I worded this.

As a matter of fact, she did appreciate it. Although she did question
the verisimilitude of their use of the word "into," in one scene, as
being "into" something, which they didn't say until somewhat later historically.

Hm. I wonder what that means. Something about somebody having to live
with an insane asshole probably.

I really like the comics of American Splendor and I figured that
everything I like about the comics has to do with them being comics and
not, say, a movie, so I passed on it. I only watched Ghost World in the
hope of seeing Enid's comeuppance, and was delighted when she comeupped
herself. FOREVER.

Nice avoidance of qualitative terms. I am taking the title of this
thread as being humorous or ironic since I also expressly avoid
qualitative terms in describing films, and only make recommendations
based on my opinions and tastes, not critical rectitude and declarations
of quality. I know what I like, and I know it's not all the same as
what any other person likes, but sometimes it overlaps. I'LL SEE YOU IN COURT.

Let me put it this way. Princess Wei sure appreciated it.

I still sometimes think wistfully of making a movie of Justin Green's
"Binky Brown Meets the Holy Virgin Mary." Not for long though.

?!? What about "objectively correct reviews"? That was supposed to PISS
YOU OFF! Damn.

More likely at somebody's funeral.

A movie made from a comic might not be good for all the same reasons as
the comic, but can still be good for SOME of the same reasons, plus new
ones. It's theoretically possible. "American Splendor" is a rare
example.

To me, a movie made from a book can be a perfectly good movie -- AS
LONG AS I HAVEN'T READ THE BOOK FIRST.

You sure use a lot of words to say "yes."

I notice lately on This Old House, EVERYBODY says "absolutely" when they
mean yes, whereas in media not based so exclusively in the New England
region only about forty to sixty percent of people do so. Except in
sports media where people always try to use four syllable words for one
syllable ideas to show they are not lummoxes and the opposite effect is created.

That may be because "yes" is not all I was saying.

Good to see that somebody's keeping count.

I notice that people have an annoying habit of telling people that they "NEED"
to do this or that. i.e. "You NEED to stop that," or, "You NEED to go to your
room."
What I NEED is for people to stop telling other people what they NEED.
