I know a lot of you use Giganews. Anyone like any other providers? Soooo
tired of being left in the cold with all this juicy slackfilled meat just
falling like mana, and me for want of a decent usenet provider unable to
stuff it greedily into my craw.

I'm going to tell you something that I ordinarily don't.
But I'm happy today. OK, so you get an outdated newreader,
like the one I've got. The good thing about it is that you
can open up to five doors at once, I could jigger it for more.
But 5 is fine. Then you got a carrier signal, which you then
look for maxbaud.com list o' daily freeservers, some are
listed for speed, some for high number of newfroups, and
some for high numbers of messages. So, find some of each
and open all of the doors and laissez les bons temps roulez!
Best of all, at no extra charge to you, the consumer.

news.individual.net

good: it's free
it's run by a German university, so it works

bad: no binaries
no binaries
and, no binaries

This is the page with daily updated free server list.
They are listed as "posting" and "no posting"
"number of msgs" and you can get some idea
of propagation from this--
http://freenews.maxbaud.net/

Here's a freeware of an old NewsPro you might like better than what you use--
http://www.netwu.com/newspro/freeware.htm
(small, less than 500k!)

You can put your normal ISP news, also add a couple of the ones from maxbaud
with better propagation, and then you aren't restricted to using the Outlook mail&news reader.

Very reliable. Not one problem or outage since I signed up with them.

Steer clear of www.usenet.com and www.newsfeeds.com (they seem to be
affiliated with each other). Nothing but problems, crappy support,
and they put spam in your .signature and headers.

I had a www.newsguy.com account once, but it was very slow and
outage-prone. I'd steer clear of them too.

Of course all of this could've changed in the past year, but
giganews keeps on chuggin' away.

Oncet upon a time, before Giganews, I used to have an account here:

http://airnews.net

They didn't suck too bad, but speed wize Giganews blew them away IMHO.

Look, when yer entire EGO system relies upon usenet, friends don't let
friends use free/cheap servers.

I still would advocate for freeservers!
because...the university server that I use for an auxillary
has more than 5,000 current messages for alt.slack!
I can't send on that one, but I can read.

Also, I like NewsPro because it downloads all of the messages,
and has option of chronological order or threaded.

Outlook seems to only want to download 300 messages at a time,
and it wants to thread them, so I like NewsPro better.

Or just splice into the cable, and GET ROOT!

Same here. They were slow compared to Giganews, three years ago anyway

Any reason you're looking for other providers? Giganews, once they
fixed the latency problem they had when I first signed up, has been
delivering gig upon gig of high speed slack for quite some time now.
I'm pretty happy with them, and I'm a picky bastard. Their retention
in some of the binary groups I read is RIDICULOUS.

The hippies are a menace in the form of an anachronism,
a noisy reminder of values gone sour and warped...of the
painful contradictions in a society conceived as a monument
to "human freedom" and "individual rights," a nation in
which all men are supposedly "created free and equal"...a
nation that any thinking hippy will insist has become a
fear-oriented "warfare state" that can no longer afford
to tolerate even the minor aberrations that go along
with "individual freedom". -Hunter S. Thompson

Giganews has alt.slack going back over a year.

About 4 months ago my list of unread a.s. posts had grown to about
15,000, so I last-minute skimmed for interesting stuff and then
"blanked" it all.

It's now back up to 17,000 unread posts. (I'm due for a culling again
soon.) And that's with NO SPAM. Every now and then somebody gripes
about "all the spam on alt.slack" but I haven't seen any true
advertising-type spam here in... years. Under Newsguy I recall seeing
spam sometimes.

Giganews retains a.binaries.slack for at least 3 months. Same with the
binaries MOVIES newsgroups. On my read-out, the big DivX and SVCD movie
groups have "over 99,999" posts. How much over that cut-off figure,
I've no idea. Because of this I only check alt.binaries.mac-apps once
every two months or so.

Last night I found a Laurel and Hardy movie for my dad and a short
feature for me called "Midget Madness." And I do mean short.
