OK, I'm about as non musical as you can get. But someone who I generally
trust, who is equally unmusical, has recommended to me a software package
called REASON which apparently is easy enough to use to create sounds even
if you don't know what the fuck you are doing. Mind you, I don't even have
a midi keyboard, and I couldn't use one if I had one. Although, come to
think of it, I have a Casio keyboard in the garage unopened which I bought
when Ames closed down for a song about 5 years ago, and never had the
fortitude to even open up.

I checked and it's $300, that is, if I buy it. I once spent money like that
on Poser and Bryce, and over time, I guess I got my jollies worth.

So the question is, should I invest the $300 in Reason or should I just more
slowly take that money down to Dunkin Donuts and get something that will
please me better and cheaper?

I dunno about Reason, but I'd still recommend to try the free shareware:
http://www.cakewalk.com/

Saint N used Cakewalk for all his hit tunes and swears it's so easy the
dumbest human child can use it. I think we hear proof of that daily on
the radio.

Reason is cool... I LOVE Re-Birth but it's very techno oriented....
I think there is a free demo out there to download.

Fruity-loops is also a hoot and I think is much cheaper.

There are more options in this field all the time, but you can't go
wrong with Reason, especially if you get into it enough to put your own
samples into the thing. A sharp tweaker like YOU would probably parse it
in jig time. If you're going to buy a soft-toy, get a good one and
commit to it so you can become fluid at using it and make it sit up &
bark. As a biased keyboard player, I think everyone should use 'em as
the basic controller for music software, but that's your call.

Here are 3 good addys. The first is the home site for Reason and the
next 2 are useful reviews of older versions from the great British music
mag, Sound On Sound.

You should plug that Casio keyboard into your MIDI port and listen to
all those crappy, awful sounding old MIDI's you have laying around
your hard drive. You would be amazed how good they sound when the
missing link is there.

well you need stuff to do

You should even make a completely unrealistic schedule for when you
will have it done, then daily meetings to discuss why it isn't done
yet.

That will help you scratch your phantom-job itch.

My advise is DON'T SPEND ANY MONEY, just download the many free demos
and freewares of music making progs at downloads.com and THEN decide
for yourself. There are progs for kids or idiot SubGenii with names
like Mixmaster and Groovemaker which may actually be more like what
you're looking for. They come stocked with plenty of loops to get you
started. You have to gather the monster movie soundtrack clips
yourself, for the requisite found-sound spoken nonsequitors that go in
the breaks between the dance music.

True, but the ante has been cranked up to white-hot now. In the fall of
2004, the 6th Circuit Court of Appeals, in Bridgeport Music et al vs.
Dimension Films, it was made a line in the sand that sampling even ONE
NOTE is seen as infringement, so any recognizable bit of cartoon of
movie is SO verboten now, its triple insane.

Do what you like to hand out to yer pals, but if you had any thought of
selling it, the licensing fees would crush anyone but fucking Bill
Gates. Frankly, I can't begin to imagine why Them thinks a bit of old
Godzilla flick noise or Jetsons dialogue is going to hurt the originals'
sales potential, but that's why They are THEM and We are Us. Goddamned
fucking Pinks, marching proudly into 1951 to spoil YOUR fun just because
THEY dunno how to have any.

This URL will lead you to a pretty concise coverage of everything but
the Bridgeport case, just FYI.
