anti-nostalgia

As I get older, more and more, I'm looking
back at the past and thinking to myself how
very much past events sucked, then catching
myself with the realization that they weren't
*that* bad.

At the time, and for some years after, I looked
at what happened stoically, remembering the
boredom, the meanness, the pettiness of people,
and the cheapness of things; but I also thought
of the good things.

Things, such as how I tried to force myself to
look at the bright side. And how to get anything
good in my life I had to use my time, effort,
energy and money, because no one else would. And
how, when I did, I enjoyed myself, because I was
the one in charge, and I didn't screw things up
like everybody else would. When I did something,
I did it right.

How I was the bright light, trying to cheer
others up, unsuccessfully using my charm to get
into what would have been fun, romantic, lasting
and loving relationships with any number of
pretty young ladies. In retrospect, I can't
think of a single one who didn't turn into some
whithered, hideous, shrewlike hag, but I didn't
know that at the time, and I really could have
maybe made a difference in one of their lives.

But again to anti-nostalgia, as I look back, the
thought comes out again and again of how much of
an utter waste they all were. Hollow phantoms of
what people were and are supposed to be. Cruel
vampire ghosts who lived off the life force of
others.

But I'm still young enough to catch myself and say
that things weren't entirely rotten in my youth.

At least there was me.

And I was damn good.

I'm really sorry to hear that you have developed pancreatic cancer. The
place will be much duller without you.

but someone always comes to GET you.

My life expectancy is July 5th, 2005, so as long as
I freebase Laetril until then I'm gravy. Then it's
back to the ol' sludge vat and #8 takes over.

How I got in my pajamas, I'll never know

"One of the saddest lessons of history is this:
If we've been bamboozled long enough,
we tend to reject any evidence of the bamboozle.
We're no longer interested in finding out the truth.
The bamboozle has captured us.
It's simply too painful to acknowledge,
even to ourselves, that we've been taken.
Once you give a charlatan power over you,
you almost never get it back.
So the old bamboozles tend to persist
as the new ones rise."
