'Stoning of Satan' ends hajj pilgrimage
Close to three million Muslims have taken part in the annual "Stoning of
Satan" ritual in Saudi Arabia, as the hajj pilgrimage draws to a close.
The last and most dangerous ritual of the hajj involves pilgrims
throwing stones at three pillars symbolising the devil in the city of Mina.
Two-hundred and fifty people were killed in a stampede there last year.
Saudi authorities have since spent $36 million upgrading the site and
have urged pilgrims to spread their visits throughout the day.

Just a week or two ago, I read that the reason
there hasn't been any other major 9-11 attack
on the US, is because the US let al-Qeida know
that if they did, then we would nuke their rock.
All of a sudden, they realized that their entire
reality is focused on the Kaaba, that big rock
covered with velvet, in Mecca. And there is not
a goddamned thing they could do if the US decided
to nuke it.
And yet, if the US did, it would to a great extent
ruin Islam for everybody. Because you *have* to
visit Mecca and that rock once in your life, it
says so right there in the Koran, somewhere.
And the Koran is always right, in all times and
in all places, so if the Kaaba, and Mecca for
that matter, are so utterly nuked with a dirty
bomb that there is nothing left but a glassy,
rocky desert radioactive for tens of thousands
of years, they are boned. And the US would say,
"Hey, don't blame us. Blame those assholes who
attacked us." And *they* are closer to al-Qeida
than they are to us.
And nice guys that we are, we would probably
notify the Saudis to evacuate Mecca 72 hours
before it was to be destroyed.

I hate to say it, but that would probably do the trick. I always thought
they should turn Jerusalem into a museum and just charge admission, put a
wall around it and make sure everyone who works there is an atheist.
Of course they could threaten to nuke that too. That would cool everyone's
jets.

If it was melted down, you could still visit. Sure, you would get a
healthy dose, but so what?
Anyway, I know plenty of Muslims who have not and will not visit the
rock. It is not that big a deal to the non-fundamentalists among them.
