Dear SubGenius DVD XCopy Platinum expert...

I just started using this. The test 'backups' I've tried so far play fine in my PC, but my (R2)
XBox doesn't recognise them and my household DVD player won't play recordable media.

I haven't found anything in the documentation to suggest that the copies are somehow 'keyed' to the
machine they're recorded on. Does anyone else use this software and can confirm that disks
produced with it can be used on a regular player, or on another PC or Mac?

I heard tell that the DVDs that I make won't play on X-Box -- they're
standard DVD-Rs that play on most other things EXCEPT expensive DVD
players and the occasional laptop.

What you may need is possibly THE CHEAPEST DVD PLAYER YOU CAN FIND. The
$40 Apex plays all DVD formats plus VCD and SVCD. The Philips DVP 642
plays those and DivX AVI -- it's $60.

As a side note, I have noticed that for some reason, I have been able
to copy commercial DVDs to VHS tape using the Philips. I've only done
that with three movies but oddly enough there didn't seem to be any
copy protection happening whatsoever.

What I'm saying is, maybe you should nab one before The Man catches on.

they play OK here - that's how I watch 'em. They don't play on my laptop, however.
Maybe it is R1 XBoxes that don't like your DVD-Rs

I went through this, I have a top of the line DVD player which
wouldn't play any Subgenius discs. I got the Apex for 30 and it plays
them fine. I have gone through the same thing a couple times since,
if a movie won't play on the high-end player it inevitably will on the
Apex.

I suspect the KISS principle is at work here somewhere.

I had mostly troubles settling on a particular brand of blanks. TDK and
Verbatim seem to work best for me.

I also stopped using the RWs. It seemed to me that the DVD player was able
to burn through and wipe out whatever was recorded on them. Yeah, I know
this is supposed to be impossible but...

I also found that -R seems to be the best format for general use.

If you ask me, home written DVDs are a technology not quite ready for prime
time. Not 100% guaranteed.

And if you like acronyms, here's another: YMMV.
