Hacking VNRs

(Posted to alt.slack 'cuz some alt.binaries.slack -ers like LeMur do
projects of this sort already. And alt.tv.mst3k? Read on.)

I've been reading the NYTimes stories and other coverage (f'rinstance:
http://alternet.org/mediaculture/21493/) about Government-produced and
corp-produced things posing as news and distributed to networks and
local stations -- many of whom run these things as "real" news.

Two questions popped up in my mind:

1) Could we fake some of these, ala the Yes Men, and get local newsies
to broadcast the fakes?

2) How do we get on the distribution list for these things? SOe of the
coverage points out that some local news operations are taking the
videos and dubbing their own reporters' voices. And it hit me! (whap)
This looks like a job for mst3k!

Or, if those guys don't wanna re-form and deal with VNRs (or even if
they do,) other people could take these things and insert their own
soundtracks, no? Think of it: You already have the video, so all you
need to produce is a soundtrack.

Get your Foley rigs charged up! There's work to do!

only if it's a *real* slow news day.

Interesting concept!

May take some 'social engineering' to get the correct information for the
'handshake' that certifies you as a 'trusted source'.
Or packet search the 'router/switch stream' until you find an original to
borrow ;-)

As far as how to obtain the VNRs from Gov't agencies and corps, I
wouldn't be too surprised if they put files online and send local
newsies the URLs.

Or maybe there's an alt.binaries.multimedia.conspiracy nesgroup?
