Off to War follows the lives of U.S. National Guardsmen who find themselves
being deployed into the battlefields of Iraq, even though many have huge
misgivings about the war and their ability to fight. The film focuses on the
239th Engineer Company, which is made up of 57 citizen soldiers from the
small town of Clarksville, Arkansas, who never expected to be forced to
leave their jobs and families. The film also reveals the heavy emotional
strain on the families and friends who are left behind. In a township of
just under 7,000, the departure of the 239th brings war and its terrors into
every home in the community.

Born and raised in Little Rock, Arkansas, filmmakers and brothers Craig and
Brent Renaud followed these "part-time soldiers" from their first
notification of deployment to Iraq in October, 2003, to the first casualties
on the ground and beyond. These part-time soldiers, who are members of the
National Guard and Army Reserve, and who typically drill just a weekend a
month and two weeks in the summer, now make up about 40 per cent of the U.S.
troops on the ground in Iraq. They are often assigned some of the most
dangerous missions, including convoy duty and guarding facilities.

Being in the military in any capacity requires a healthy
dollop of dumbass. Joining the National Guard without
having the requisite training takes a double dollop.

Think about it: there is a short period of time for mostly
males, when they have enough of an education to function,
but have no grasp of the world around them. This is when
they are ideal for military service. This is also why they
push to recruit enlisted people right out of high school.

Beyond that point, most of them start to expand their
consciousness and make realizations about what exactly it
means to wear a military uniform. If nothing else, they
*damn* well want to be trained to be an effective killer
before being put in any situation where they might need
that knowledge. So they sure as hell aren't going to sign
on the dotted line without knowing that stuff first, which
is a bit of a paradox. This is also why officers are usually
college graduates.

But without prior service, joining the National Guard is
just asking to be thrown into a melee with a butter knife,
and that is what happens. And why Guard units frequently
get their asses whipped until they can beg, borrow or
steal what they need to protect themselves.

The bottom line is that the military does not give a shit
for the individual. They don't care if a Guardsman is a
crazed redneck Mormon racist gun nut from Utah capable of
slaughtering a regiment of enemy with a can opener and a
Pez dispenser; or some schmuck who cleans out used car lots
for a living and wears a girdle so he can put on his uniform.
They have a mission to do, and they'll throw anybody they
have at it.

And after they're done, the military will let them go with
a hearty, "Don't let the door hit you on the ass on your
way out!" It's what they do. It's what they've done since
Pharoah was a private.
