If you'd be so kind as to help increase support for this Talon technology
you aliens use, please answer the following two questions (if you're a Mac
user).

What Mac OS do you use (specifically, version number - if OSX, then OSX
v10.1? .2? .3 .4?)
What mail client do you use?

OSX 10.3.8
Runs much faster than OSX 10.2, seems more stable.
10.2 ran a lot slower than system 9.

I prefer female clients.

Windows XP, its great, I dont know why people still use MACs for? sure they
used to look cool, but really. Macs? I mean yuk, the whole idea of the MAC
being a alternative lifestyle whatever is just a ploy buy the elite to buy
more or there crap.

But if the Mac was as cheap as an IBM clone and had the same compatability
id probably get when when my grand old Dell bites the bullet.

Outlook express, its cheap, easy to use and I didnt have to do anything it
came pre-installed.

I got some Trolls I don't think they are the original ones though from
*Bob's* original Berkley, Philip K. Dick hair period though. Anyway
they are good clutter for the home.

Ya ya ya. I'm just trying to get these arteestick Mac bitches to gimme the
411 on what all they like to use. Don't for a second think that I'm actually
interested. But google can take me only so far into the mind of the mac
user, and I can only get it to spit out the most common bits from like 4
years ago. About 3 weeks ago I actually helped configure an OS7 client for
DIALUP....man that took me back...in MS terms, that'd be about like
configuring someone for a PPP connection with Trumpet Winsock under Windows
3.1. No STAAALLL gia. I only today learned this OSX is actually four
different operating systems. AND THIS IS SIMPLER? It's the likes o' yerself
that make the lives o' the likes o' meself so simple...Outlook Express, and
perhaps one of the last four years flavour's of Outlook is all I gotta know
to do my job....sigh...my boss likes documented info...I just tend to Google
madly when talking to an exotic customer, makes it more interesting...but
vhatevah...

Shit maaate!!! _that's_ your prob.

I shouldn't really be telling u this (at your stage of... ummm) but...

"bill" is the ANTI-"BOB"

I just got a mac mini - it's very cute - about the size of a padded CD
holder - it's low end but kicks ass

cost 800 Ozbucks standard with 256 and 40 gigs - I added bluetooth for
another 100. Cd burner and dvd reader - can upgrade to cd and dvd
burner and/or 80 gig hd.

You've got a screen and keyboard already - the mini's got a 56k modem in it

The free software does EVERTHING

There's even a game where you can switch off all the stupid things
shooting at you and just fly around this great landscape as a pteradactal...

It is worth it to me just as a duke box - if iTunes is running you just
put an audin cd in and it just stitches it together into an mp3 (even
the crappy old shit that you could Never play cos they skipped so much)

Then looks it up on a net database and fills in all the details
album, song, artist etc indexes it all and stores it in your music
library - Then goes 'tinkle' and ejects it. So FUCKIN easy.

Did that (well whoever got to play with the mini did it) for a couple of
days and put all the cd away. Got a new one the o'day - ripped it 'n
wrapped it in gladWrap n put it away.

We've got 4 gigs already - that's about 100 cd's

On the techo side of things - the current mac os (OSX) is based on unix
- this means that I now have access to stuff like hard core science and
engineering routines that has been written over the years by ppl in the
universitys (Who have always used unix)

Oh and one other thing I DON'T need virus software...

There just aren't any that bother the mac/unix shell!

So you are now not so ignorent (in that particular way)

;)

Damn, though I'm a dyed in the wool over my eyes MS lover, I've had my eye
on that thing since it came out. A simple little thing you can hide next to
your Wintel and nobody knows. Kinda like keeping a piece of strange locked
in a closet somewhere for an occasional perv-o-meal.

But tell me, does a Winders keyboard and mouse work OK with the thing, or do
I need an Apple one so I don't have to cross my fingers in unnatural ways
just to make shit run???

And has OS X finally discovered that mouses have RIGHT click buttons AND
scroll wheels, or is that still a strange concept amongst the Mac-a-zoids?
No right click would annoy the fooking 'ell out of me. I haven't used a
MENU in ten years or a shortcut key in 15, BTW, or a scroll bar in 8 years.

See, that's what I'm afraid of. It's like oriental women, they look nice
but the gash goes the OTHER way, or so I'm told. Know what I'm saying?

This is a confession - I've got a totally crappy 30 buck tandy k'board n
mouse (not apple) - no special drivers... BUT and this is the sordid
confession - though I still have the right button blu-taced up I'VE
STARTED TO USE THE SCROLL WHEEL.

Can I get a one button with a scroll?

Oh and the other day I turned the music down with one of those stupid
'special' buttons that spread like a plague across the top of this
grotesquely BIG keyboard - so I guess the short answer is yes.

The greater encloses the lesser.

And it's soooo fuckin' CUTE

Hint to the uninitiated: Always take with a heavy dose of skepticism
any laudatory statement which contains "kicks ass".

Does it julienne fries? Dice and slice tomatoes? Does it come with
a C compiler and SDK documentation? Does it come with a spelling
checker?

Even if you could spell, why is that compelling?

Wow, CDDB. How stimulating. I guess the 'tinkle' thing puts it
over the top.

"I" translate that as "he likes it more than he expected"

I haven't got the unix side worked out much yet - I know I need a fortan
(believe it or not) compiler for some hydrodynamic (lift/drag etc)
models I need. I've got an osx copy of illustrator and anyway it runs
all the old stuff I've accumulated over the years in a shell.

ohhhh u big meanie - thought I did pretty good wot wif gettin' the 'p'
and the 't'. Gee sorry...

oh not compelling - it's just the closest I'll ever get to 'interested'
in a game - I want to put 3d maps of my islands into the software as
backdrops and just explore...

Or... "I have to justify my purchase by telling everyone else how
great my purchase decision was". It's pretty common everywhere.
People even lie about who they voted for after an election, because
they don't want to be on the losing side of anything.
YMMV.

It all depends on what you want to do with your computer. Frankly I don't
use M$ to do anything serious. All I do with it is use it for games and to
access proprietary hardware which works ONLY under M$ although it is in
the same box running another OS (talk about elitist snobs).

The only time I bought a Mac was to help a friend who needed the cash to
move to another city. I sold the parts at a profit. All the other Macs I
have were gifts. I want to turn one into a backup machine for when my *NIX
PC goes down (I think I may have to replace the power supply this year). I
want to turn another into a *NIX server so I can learn about BSD. As to
the others... Maybe a print server. Other than that... Who knows.

As I said, it all depends on what is being done. I still have three
functional Apple// machines. The games on them are frequently more
entertaining than those on the PC or Mac in spite of the lower quality
sound and graphics. Come to think about it the diversity of game types is
greater on the older machines than on the newer ones. Now I think about
it, I could probably get one of these working as a backup machine a lot
faster than I could for one of the Macs. The only potential problem is
storage...

> But if the Mac was as cheap as an IBM clone and had the same compatability
> id probably get when when my grand old Dell bites the bullet.

Where I am, the difference in price (for what you're getting) is less
than 10%. In my case, if I got a Mac which could run OS X, it would be
more compatible with my *NIX PC than an M$ PC.

>> What mail client do you use?

And you actually go on the internet with that program? I suppose it IS
possible if you are really careful. If you want to see what the full
version of the program looks/works like without all the problems and bugs
then check out a program called Evolution. It runs on a *NIX box (which
means it might even work on a Mac with OS X). I think Novell is currently
in charge of this project (there have been a lot of mergers and buyouts in
the last little while). Some friends running XP have switched to
Thunderbird and are VERY happy. Then again their needs are probably not
the same as yours.

BTW, what's the purpose behind alt.slack? Just curious...

Depends on what Mac I'm using. Right now I have 7.5.5 on two machines.
8.1 (soon to be Net BSD) on another. Finally I have 9.1 (soon to be 8.6)
on the final machine. Oh, I forgot... I have system 6.something on a plus.
Only two of my machines could run OS X, but they'd really crawl.

I'm currently running 10.2 on a beige G3

> What mail client do you use?
Mail.

The UNIX thing is great, I like the non-crashability of it. I've read
about all sorts of great things I can do from the command line and I
might get around to some of them eventually.
