A Serious Note

I really can't recommend The Cat and the Fiddle, starring Ramon Novarro
and Jeannette MacDonald. I had often read references to Novarro but had
never seen him in anything until now, and I now know why you never hear
about him any more. This probably wasn't the best vehicle for him since
he seems to have been the Ben Affleck of his day. Good if not
challenged. I am really not a fan of the type of story which features an
obnoxious guy who pesters and torments a woman until she is overcome by
his charm. I'd much rather have seen Novarro get a good kick in the
groin about ten minutes into this. Now, as you ought to know by now I
LOVE Jeannette MacDonald, even in movies that really aren't very good,
like Three Daring Daughters, because she usually gets to give at least
one totally kickass performance which brings tears to my eyes and a
vague swoony feeling, but all of the songs in The Cat and the Fiddle
were pretty weak and she never really got to let it rip. Even Frank
Morgan, who normally exudes huge droplets of charm and huggability, was
a creepy slimeball in this thing. By the time it got to the obligatory
operettta sequence with its hoisting of tankards in the beer garden and
troops of gold braided soldier boys, I was pretty much in continuous
pain. I don't think even Dick Powell could have pulled it together for
me. The one slightly redeeming feature was the mystical transformation
in the last five minutes into some of the funkiest ancient technicolor
imaginable, just one step above hand tinting. It certainly overshadowed
the unmemorable last song and grand finale, which is not a good sign.

Neither was Mrs. Nenslo, but she married you anyway. That means there
is hope for anyone except J'Lard, who will simply have to live out his
wretched days slaking his unholy lusts on a succession of psychotic
poodles he keeps in bondage in the cellar. It doesn't always pay to
get too friendly with your neighbors, especially if you love your
poodle.
