My pal Saint Dave sent me this:

"This is not satire, though I thought from the accompanying photo that
it might be. Agence France Presse does not do satire."

http://www.commondreams.org/headlines04/1107-02.htm

When he asked what I thought of it, I spake thusly:

I am not surprised at this bizarre scene, although after seeing how the
election went, I am rapidly changing my focus to smaller, more important
personal things. Insane zealotry and political chicanery are not within
the realm of Things I Can Fix. For various economic and psychological
reasons, the rest of the world has chosen not to blockade our ships'
incursions in the Gulf, the U.N. and NATO have not moved to pull away
from the U.S. ideologically or physically, events such as Spain pulling
its troops out of Iraq have had little impact and The People have spoken
for ignorance, sophistry and complacency. Since Religious
sleight-of-hand, xenophobia and the better salesmen have won out in a
decisive way, what remains to be seen is how far "we" will go when the
inevitable conscription starts to fill out our all-too-thin military
ranks and at what point the concurrent loss of life, jobs, personal &
family monies and civil rights leads to either an economic strain that
snaps key structural supports or a social upheaval that lies somewhere
between a demand for impeachment and near-civil-war protests. The recent
pepper-spraying of a Kerry-supporting crown in Oregon is proof enough of
how the sitting rulers think.

It is also easy to imagine another large act of terrorism on U.S. soil
that will crank the panic up and give the Fundies an even tighter grip,
which makes my teeth sweat. Are you ready for a variant on martial law
that limits distribution of fuel, forces restaurants and movie theatres
to close by 8 p.m. in larger cities, puts a clamp on certain
manufacturing sectors and demands implementation of a national I.D.
card? I am not waving a liberal panic-flag, as I find the general
liberal camp to be almost as revolting as the conservative one; I am
merely considering all I have read and remembering that Berlin started
out as Brownshirt-Lite before the heavy hitters came into play. In my
view, the major constraint is simply that complete martial law would be
bad for Business. Bread & circuses and all that, ahem.

Since we are obviously running short of Brave Young Men and retired or
National Guard types of 50+ are being dragged into the breach, it will
be "interesting" to see how we even maintain the dodgy Iraqi setup, much
less cope with the very real possibility of a sudden Iranian/Syrian
uprising that could overwhelm it and require the use of much larger
weapons. The apparent stubborn refusal to accept the wide range of
eternally-warring sand clans as being a very real, subcutaneous reality
only magnifies the mess. Couple that with the low-key belligerence of
the Iranians relative to their yellow-cake uranium processing of late
and we could be seeing the early stages of at least *A* "Big One," if
not The Big One. Boy, you're gonna need a mighty big Swiffer to clean up
that one.

Never mind our domestic strains and discomforts; both the U.S. and
Middle Eastern leaders are now convinced that God is behind their
respective causes. That's one fuse you just can't un-light; the
explosion has to come in one form or another. That much pressure can't
sit in a holding pattern forever.

This article just reinforces what we already recognized; the herd
mentality was simply closer to the surface than we had hoped. Therefore,
set aside any starry-eyed vision of becoming like the Jetsons, because
here come the Flintstones and they're NOT just seeking to go bowling.
Fred has an AK-47, he believes Crom has his back and he won't be
dismayed by a swat on the nose with a Sharper Image catalog. Allah may
be All-Merciful, but that part doesn't seem to be getting much of an
airing these days. Oh dear!

Did you notice that the rest of the world also didn't blockade our ships or
pull away from us ideologically or physically when Bill Clinton decided to
invade Serbia?

Also, do you happen to know if Clinton has found WMDs in Serbia yet??

Yeah if people reject what the administration does, it's not because
they don't approve of it, it's because they PERSECUTE AND WHIP anybody
who isn't a LIBERAL FAG.

Just like in The Passion of the Christ, huh?

Of course the Bush administration claimed high and low that they had
evidence of WMD which they still haven't produced (not the weapons
themselves, but even any substantial EVIDENCE that they MIGHT have had
them, anything to back up what they claimed at the beginning), and
there was nothing remotely similar on the other end fo the analogy
you're making. In fact it isn't even so much an "analogy" as a
"retarded spatic jerk that makes no sense at all".

But that doesn't matter, right? I'm not opposed to you because you
MAKE NO SENSE. I'm opposed to you because I'm PERSECUTING you for not
being part of the LIBERAL CONSPIRACY.

Right?

We in the liberal conspiracy are moaning and gnashing our teeth that
you bastards took the election. Our plan to introduce flouridation
into the water to sap your previous bodily fluids, and to make
homosexuality mandatory for schoolchildren, was poised and ready to
go.

AND WE'D HAVE GOT AWAY WITH IT TOO, IF IT HADN'T BEEN FOR YOU DARNED

No, but both the Bush administration AND John Kerry AND Madeleine Albright
AND Bill Clinton said that THEY believed Iraq had WMDs, based on both
British and American intelligence.

No, Kerry didn't. I've seen that claim before; he signed a document
supporting the president with some very specific reservations.

Hey, that's funny. Because the two situations are EXACTLY THE SAME.

Define "invasion" retard. I guess that's a bit tough for a limbecile,
allow me

in·va·sion Audio pronunciation of "invasion" ( P ) Pronunciation Key
(n-vzhn)
n.

1. The act of invading, especially the entrance of an armed force
into a territory to conquer.
2. A large-scale onset of something injurious or harmful, such as a
disease.
3. An intrusion or encroachment.

Here's a hint, flying over and leaving isn't an invasion.

The Aerial Bombing Campaign was a NATO operation.

The US, France, Italy (I think) and Germany all contributed Aircraft.

It was only the US that lost aircraft in that campaign. The French Navy's Super
Entard kept its amazing record of never having suffered a combat loss in over
25 years. This include the Falkland, Persian Gulf, Gulf War I, and recently
they contributed to wiping out Ivory Coast's Air Force in one day.

Too bad none of our overpriced aircraft can make the same claim.

Well, there is the small matter of the entire world's combined naval might
being incapable of taking on a single US carrier task force. That would
probably go a long way to explaining why the thought of a naval blockade
never entered anyone's minds. What, with it being completely impossible,
and all...

During a combined exercise off the coast of Gilbrata, a Brazilian Navy Diesel
sub was able to inflirate the escort screen and make mock torpedo runs at an US
Carrier not once, but 3 times!

In a recent exercise with the Indian Air Force, the US Air Force was
embarrished by the Indians flying 40 year old Mirage III's.

It helps when every war Reagan. Bush the smarter and Bush the not quite as
smart has Bush I ever started have been against 3rd rate military powers with
little or no capabilities to fight back.

You should try some good alien 'cue, Alexa, it'd cure you of those

I did notice on photos on Yahoo that the marines were carring Gas Masks. You
never see any other Photos of US troops in other parts of Iraq with them.

They were saying before the assault that they were worried that the
'insurgents' might use chemical weapons of some kind.

What is all this crap about 'Weapons of Mass Destruction' anyway?
There's nothing chemicals or gas can do that big American bombs can't do
better, so why pick on them? A Weapon of Mass Destruction is a nuclear
bomb, shirley? Or germ warfare.

WMD is a bullshit propaganda term designed to provoke fear. Like 'Al
Quaida'.

That's not Al Jazeera, you silly man. Al Jazeera is a secular, reformist
Arab station staffed by mostly ex-BBC journalists. I watched a
documentary about them and most seemed to have wives or girlfriends
rather than camels.
