HellPopic political coda: My ass is grass, mow me now

--------

Its pretty simple, really: the Republicans are better SALESMEN and
correspondingly willing to do most anything to make that sale. Kerry
booted it by letting them do the same thing to him that they did to
Gore: he allowed them to make it about personality rather than issues.
He was a less capable POLITICIAN, which is the double-edged sin of it.
If he had focused on the economy rather than the circular, baiting
banter about Iraq, he could have tipped it his way, I think, as the
margins were damned close in many places. If he'd hammered at Bush's
suspect Halliburton connections and asked why his "great plan' was
sending jobs and young men overseas, hurting the families whose values
Bush trumpeted so, he might have had a different phone chat with
GeeDubya.

Bush was able to wave the EXTERNAL Boogeyman of Terror hard enough that
people were diverted from the more immediate INTERNAL Boogeyman of Your
Empty Wallet and why its so threatened. Kerry responded to Bush's choice
of Boogeyman and let him set the tone. He mysteriously never really took
Bush to task for the lousy economy and the daily worry about the rent.
As a result, too many people let that "strong leader" crap hold sway
with their eye on the Ragheads when they should have considered the
larger picture painted by the connection between international issues
and our domestic financial woes.

If Bush makes the next 4 years as increasingly miserable as I suspect
he will, then in 2008, there will be a big backlash in favor of the
Democrats and the imbalance will shift the other way by force rather
than careful forethought. With a Republican dominance in both House and
Senate now, I recommend that you stock up on canned goods and ASS-LUBE.
You'll NEED 'em if you're not already comfortably fixed with a stock
portfolio or ownership of a reasonably healthy business of a type that
reaps the benefit of classic Repub tax accomodations.

You know what the ultimate insult is? It came down to making a human
connection. Kerry came off like a dry, lecturing old professor as often
as not and presented like Herman Munster without the laughs. Bush got
down in the dirt, invoked Gawd A'Mighty (which always sells with the
rubes), told people there was a Boogeyman and that he had a Great Plan
for keeping the CHILDREN safe. The general refusal to read widely, as
many of us did, to see where the money really went and WILL go handed it
to George, the clever, mercurial village idiot.

I once again find it bitterly amusing that in politics as well as the
day-to-day, Humanity was the real key. Kerry showed far too little of
it; Bush pandered to it with a false, flag-waving sincerity the
willfully ignorant Mundanes swallowed like potato chips. As men with
zero worries about money, neither had a real clue about it to begin
with. They live in a macro-world where no one ever asks if they want
fries with that. Kerry's Congressional testimony after his tour of
Vietnam showed that he at least has a clue about the pain in the
trenches, yet failed to impart it. Bush could not care less if most
people are served to aliens on toast, yet managed to look like One Of
Us. It wasn't even "about the economy" this time; it was about who was
the better actor. Funny how the coldest cast member delivered the
"warmest" performance. Keep your stubs; you'll need to burn them for
heat.

And here I am on Usenet, where any real show of compassion or attempt
at reason generally waves a sign that points at the speaker's ass and
says "FREE BRISKET! COOK ME NOW!!" Ah, the ironic jest is so rich, I
could vomit for a week. Oh dear!

Nice rant. But there's a lot more to it.
Kerry never had a chance to set the agenda.
The 24/7 reichwing media always sets the agenda.
If you don't answer their charges, you're screwed.
If you do answer their charges, you're screwed.

But the real deal is the godawful godbots and social
conservatives who want to repeal the bill of rights.
There's no way to appeal to that taliban fascist horde.

Here's a bad thought I keep having. A majority thinks the war in Iraq is a mistake,
and a majority thinks that the country is going in the wrong direction on deficits,
healthcare costs, wages, jobs, and etc. but a Clear and Certain Majority voted for
Much More of the Same. Does not compute.

You are forgeting. Bush's "base" will be living in cardboard boxes, dumpster
diving to eat, out of work, their 401K/social security (privitzed) funds stolen
by some "finaincial advisor". Would still vote for them. As long as they
sooooooooo "Moral"

Yea, America is $800 Billion in debt, the ecomany has crashed, we're starving,
martial law has been declared, but at least those queers can't get married!
