Patrick "The Man" Volkerding needs medical help

Essentially, the message comes down to: Pat has some obscure medical
condition that appears to have put his health at serious risk, and
he's hoping some devoted Slackware devotee can offer some kind of help
-- be it medical advice, references, or something. He's not asking
directly for money (a true rarity considering the wonderful state of
the United States' health care system), though there's always the
chance that his condition could turn out some serious health costs.

The Slashdot folks are also arguing and flaming away over this:

Is it too soon for the "Give him some chicken soup" gag? ;-)

All of my best to Patrick and all.

Somehow, I have a feeling that he's going to be OK, and something
profound will come from this. And Good. Something Profound and Good.
Something Profoundly Good. Something Good and Profound.

It would seem to me that it might be time for a trip to the Mayo Clinic in
Rochester MN. They seem to be one of the best diagnostic centers in the
world.

If you are sure about that, consider sending e-mail to Pat, he mentioned it
at the end of his post.

I just got a major second opinion from an MD / computer geek friend (who
wants to clunk him over the head for asking Slashdot about medicine)
and forwarded everything to his address. Oy, that inbox is gonna be FULL!

I can't imagine that he hasn't heard of it. I'm from Minnesota, and
the Mayo Clinic is legendary, even as far away as North Dakota. :-)

As the local loonie, of course, I'm impelled to mention the possibility
of at least _checking with_ something alternative, like one of those
acupuncture places you see in the yellow pages, or an herbalist or
something - I'm a crackpot, sure, but anyone who would claim that
their version of assistance might have any observable effect, must
surely be committed to the maxim: first, do no harm.

And who knows? The worst that can happen is nothing.

All my best to Pat, his rels, and Slack.

Thanks,
Rich

Definately. He needs to set everything else but himself aside at this point.
Doctors can and do miss diagnosis all the time. It happens. Two years ago I
started having chest pains. I went to several doctors, and got set home with
various antibotics/advice. The problem continued. I started to run a fever,
which eventual reached 104 point-something F., and I was having trouble
breathing. I went back to the same place (there's not that many different
places to go in my city) and this time they did some blood work and sent it
off. Two weeks had past and by now I could bearly stand up. I had a friend
drive me out to Crouse Irving Hospital in Syracuse, NY. Being admitted, I had
collapsed my right lung and my tests came back positive for Staph infection. I
ended up with walking-pneumonia and Endocarditis (sp?) which was going after
my heart values. I figured I would likely die, and the doctors there told me I
hadn't been too far off. To make a long story a bit shorter, I ended up
staying there for 30 days. I had a constant antibiotic treatment administred
thru a PIC line, which is like an IV but goes straight into your heart. They
drained my lungs and I could breath again. Of the 9 antibiotics that could
have treated my case, I went thru 7, with Oxacillian and Gentamyocin being the
ones which finally worked. I survived it and recoved completely, but it cost me
a few of my 9 lives ;)

Point being; I *had* seen doctors who sent me home, even though I was sick;
the antibiotics that they first gave me did nothing; and my putting off going
to a good, large-city hospitial with the proper facilities nearly killed me.

Slackware will survive. He can post on Slashdot once he's well again- he
really needs to be seen by the closest well-equipped hospital aware of his
history, what he's taken/done so far, and all of his symptoms. Putting this
off longer is likely to have terrible results. Even though his illness is a
bit different, the message is the same: get to a well-equiped, large-city
hospital which can deal with this- the sooner the better.

If he had thought of it while still in California he could have just
went to the Mayo in Phoenix - would have been a lot closer.

It sounded to me like what he's asking for is very specific -- an immediate
high-dosage intravenous penicillin treatment.

Can't he just install the new kernel and reboot?

Oh, it's a hardware problem!

Sometimes I _do_ wish I had a deity after which's principles to gain and
give counseling!

Oh well ;)
