Never trust anybody for whom the Presidency would represent a cut in

About two years back, I discovered that the guy who was writing the
"Justice League" comic book for DC received greater base pay than the
Vice-President of the United States. Allah akbarf, dat's one funny,
sinister joke with 4 optional punchlines, unh?

When is the last time a major candidate could hold up against that test?
It IS a toughie.

John Kerry's taxable income in 2003: $395,000.

Salary of the President of the United States: $400,000/year.

The problem is that the Presidency has an absolutely unbeatable benefits
package, and the perks are incredible. How do you put a dollar value on
daily CIA briefings for life or 10 years of Secret Service protection?
(No, it's not for life any more. The Clintons were the last to get the
lifetime plan.)

George Bush Sr.'s annual TAXABLE income around the time of his
presidency: 38 cents.

See you have to think that one through.

I think George Sr. was also the only ex-president to actually have the
CIA give him daily briefings. It would beat CNN though wouldn't it.

Does this dress make me look fat?
Well, you do look fat, but it's not exactly the dress that's causing it. The dress is doing its best to hold it all in.

I dug more and found actual copies of returns.

One of them didn't have Kerry's home address blanked out completely. I
don't know why they even bothered in the first place; the address is no
secret. Google it (19 Louisburg Square in Boston 02108) and you get
back all kinds of hits.

Anyway.

John Kerry's 2003 total gross income: $ 395,338.
John Kerry's 2003 adjusted gross income: 395,338.
2003 Federal income tax paid by John Kerry: 102,152.

George H.W. Bush's 1990 total gross income: $ 1,329,580.
George H.W. Bush's 1990 adjusted gross income: 1,324,456.
1990 Federal income tax paid by George H.W. Bush: 204,841.

There isn't much truth in the common wisdom that "the rich don't pay
taxes." It's CORPORATIONS that don't pay taxes.

That is a toughie. Carter and Lincoln maybe. Before Lincoln I think
they paid them in drachmas or wood shavings or something, I dunno.

Oh shit. That kind of shows up another problem though, doesn't it?
If we do get a Persident who passes my test, he probably has a brother
like Billy Carter.

Well OK it's not a perfect test.

I present an extension and suggest that it be named the Adams Extension:

"Never trust anybody who wants to be President."
