Personally, I do not vote FOR particular issues or ideologies as
such; I vote against inhumanity. Yeah, in this setup, that's a
crapshoot with dice the size of the moons of Mars, but if you're going
to be kicked, don't let it be said you didn't bite the bastard's ankle
in the process.

Bill Clinton has something to say about people like John Kerry:

"There is nothing patriotic about hating your country, or pretending
that you can love your country but despise your government."

In this instance, Bill is brimming with bullshit. The "country" is made
up of actual PEOPLE, more or less. The government is made up of
narcissistic manipulators, bland android functionaries and a certain
number of capable types who are hogtied by, at best, dubious procedures
and policies.

Patriotism is a nationalistic construct that has almost nothing to do
with getting the job done. Its ADVERTISING with a big agenda. There are
things about the U.S. for which I am profoundly grateful; there are
others which are either embarrassing or downright frightening. If Bill
thinks that fighting to oppose blatant despoilers is incompatible with
patriotism, then he was inhaling jimson weed the day he said that.

Okay, any system founded and run by Hyoo-mons is going to have flaws. I
accept that reality and I have both respect and compassion in my kit for
the widely varying situations that sometimes go askew due to the
unforeseen or unavoidable instances of bad weather. However, I know that
my COUNTRY has been suffering because the higher-end GOVERNMENT as
defined by the Halliburtonites has become a band of smirking bullies and
heavy-handed opportunists who are doing insane and needless damage. If I
have to do some perverse dance with Dick Cheney to be a "patriot," then
pack my bags for MARS. Okay, there's a straight line for ya.

It's all about context, as usual.

The quote was from a speech at Michigan State on May 5, 1995, barely two
weeks after the Oklahoma City bombing and amid widespread fear of the
perceived threat posed to American democracy by extremist right-wing
militias:

"So I say this to the militias... If you say violence is an acceptable
way to make change, you are wrong... How dare you suggest that we in the
freest nation on Earth live in tyranny. How dare you call yourselves
patriots and heroes.

"I say to you, all of you, the members of the Class of 1995, there is
nothing patriotic about hating your country, or pretending that you can
love your country but despise your government. There is nothing heroic
about turning your back on America, or ignoring your own
responsibilities. If you want to preserve your own freedom, you must
stand up for the freedom of others with whom you disagree. But you also
must stand up for the rule of law. You cannot have one without the other."

I guess the President didn't get it, either.

What about Bush's reaction to 9/11?

The President of the United States and Commander in Chief of the United
States Armed Forces heard the words "America is under attack" whispered
in his ear, and he SAT ON HIS HEMORRHOIDAL TEXAS ASS for FIVE SOLID MINUTES.

Fun fact: Warning time on a submarine-launched nuclear attack can be as
little as 6 minutes, and perhaps not even that.

I would simply say "What was a Senator SUPPOSED to do at that
moment?" It was on the President's watch. You or I would have surely
all but bolted from the room and hit the deck running. I can't peer
into Kerry's soul and say what he might or might not have done, but
aside from getting on the horn and finding out what was what ASAP, it
wasn't his place to deal with it directly. Perhaps George took his
time because he had been informed that others were already on it and
he HAD a few minutes to sit with the kids without upsetting them with
the sudden news. Perhaps Kerry sought information with deliberate
speed after the initial shock. Perhaps if there was a Justice League,
Superman and Green Lantern would have stopped the planes from hitting
the towers.

I do not think Kerry is perfect by any means and I do not think
George is really a COMPLETE idiot, but all in all, Kerry has a Silver
Star and shows evidence of modifying his views when presented with new
evidence, a VITAL sign of flexibility George lacks. George has failed
businesses, egregious public fumbling and highly suspect business
connections trailing behind him like toilet paper stuck to his shoe.

All one can do is take a deep breath, vote and hope for the best.
When rich men play, the non-rich inevitably suffer and no rhetoric
from left or right can change THAT trumping fact. Sure, I vote
partially from my gut, but I also read from BOTH sides and make sure
my mind INFORMS my gut. Its hard to live in a W.C. Fields world - "I
never vote for, I always vote against"- but the hopeful lesser of two
evils is still less of it.

Bush has his faults just like everybody else. However, the Democrats,
in their tunnel-vision delirium to get revenge on Bush for "stealing"
the presidency from Al Gore, would have nominated Charles Manson for
President if they thought that Manson could get Bush out of the Oval
Office. The Dems had 10+ potential candidates at one time but ended up
nominating sociopathic liar John Kerry.
