Great interview on Salon today. Starts with Islamic fundamentalism
but then goes into the religious crisis in general:

The unspoken conclusion is that eventually a new sort of religion is
going to sweep over the old ones, to fit our new modern society. What
could fit better than "Bob's" Industrial Church? All the benefits of
being hate-filled genocidal religious maniacs without the
inconvenience. And the only religion in existence that can cope with
the crucial role of IRONY. (The old old religions, Judaism included,
were good with irony, but then the underlying philosophy changed to an
idea of "providence" which works a lot better in the Middle Ages than
today, when what we really need is an idea of Slack)
