Micropower Broadcasting

From: talysman@jasmine.psyber.com (John Laviolette)

I **REALLY** need to get a copy of the article I read and try to provide
more specific information (company names, &c.) ... but this info is TOO
VALUABLE to be confined to one brain.

Apparently, there is a man in Berkeley selling "micropower radio" kits
for $55. This is actually quality equipment that allows someone to
broadcast programming in a mile radius.

One of his clients was an independent broadcaster (Radio Free Berkeley?)
Micropower broadcasting is apparently ILLEGAL here in the US, but what
teh hell -- I'm sure some of you out there don't care what the FCC says.
(There's actually a courtcase with the FCC over whether people can be
prosecuted for broadcasting their own programming in a limited area.)

All of this sounds interesting, but what REALLY made me prick up my ears
(ouch!) was the comment that he'd have MICROPOWER TELEVISION KITS ready
in a few months.

Pirate radio is one thing, but PIRATE TELEVISION?!?!?

This I hafta see!

(can anyone provide names for this guy or his company? I'll try to
locate the article again and post any information I can, but I'm sure
there are someo people out there who CAN'T WAIT...)

I've had some luck with lashing a walkman with auto-reverse plugged into
an FM stereo wireless mike kit (FM-10). It provides workers in my
building with a continuous re-education channel, and the bosses haven't
been able to find it yet. Since I'm indoors and sticking to a vacant
chunk of the spectrum, no one has made any serious complaints, and it's
being treated as more or less a joke.

I'd really like to get a stonger unit, like you talk about above, and
enlighten the small town I work in. I could fit a gel-cell battery and
the tape player inside a tupperware box or ammo can, and hook it up to
one of those solar powered electric fence chargers (like down at the
feed store). If I picked the right hill top, a media barrage tape could
really do some outreach. Maybe I should disguise it as a NOAA weather
monitoring station. Hmmm.....

You could probubly even start mass producing the setups, and hooking them
to helium-filled weather balloon-type things, and sending them on their
way once a week, the jet stream taking them to different destinations all
the time. From up in the air, the broadcast could be made to be conical,
pointing downwards, yes? That seems as though it would cover an even larger
radius. (or, would it be spherical...I'm no radio wave expert).
