The Dangerous Environment
If you tried to tell someone today exactly what was wrong with him in
specific and complex terms, he would look at you blankly. He's worried
only about the fact that the stock exchange trembled and Tel & Tel rose
while gold shares sank and this has implications concerning racialism
in Lower Slobovia. He knows that's what's really wrong with him: it's
the fact that he _might_ go broke if he didn't go broke.
Here's a person facing a boa constrictor that's about to constrict. If
you tried to talk to that person about his childhood, you wouldn't get
much attention from him. He sits there looking fixedly at the snake.
He knows what's wrong with him: he's about to be constricted.
Some religious activies have had simple solutions to this. All you do
is say, "There is no substance to reality." You look at the boa
constrictor and think good thoughts and say, "There ain't no boa
constrictor." If you think these thoughts strongly enough while you're
being constricted, you won't mind it. They've had methods of coping
with this in the past, so we're not completely original.
Scientology Zero covers descriptions of the environment and what is
wrong with it. It is concerned with zones of chaos, the dangerous
environment and handling threats to the individual from it. This takes
care of the world in which the person lives.
The whole subject of Scientology Zero is instantly summatable in the
phrase "the dangerous environment." That fits into the frame of the
individual who is listening to you. You have immediate agreement that
the environment is dangerous.
A great mnay people are professional dangerous environment makers, or
"Chaos Merchants" (SPs). The include the politician, the policeman,
the newspaperman and the undertaker. These people feel that if they
didn't sell a dangerous environment they would promptly go broke. The
environment is dangerous enough, but it is to their interest to make it
far more dangerous than it is.''
