this is from 'IN THESE TIMES'. it's a review of a recent book by DOKTOR
toni grant, ' beING a WOman: fullfilling your feminity and finDING lOVE',
by susan DOUGlas.
Unfortunately, the feminist movement (which I, in a certain sense, am
a member of) generally hasn't recognized that the "old system" (circa
1900-1950) was damned good for those women who managed to "marry
well". (It's an easier job being a doctor's wife than being a doctor,
and the pay is nearly as good...) Of course, it really bit for those
women who didn't/couldn't/didn't want to marry well. The women who
could have married well back then but aren't so hot at hauling in the
bucks on their own jobs these days have definitely lost ground. The
cost of progress...
Sorry to be serious here, folks.
