The Sunday _Boston Globe_ had an interesting focus article on a
movement that they describe as ``Polish Yippies''. The main group
seems to be a group calling themselves the Orange Alternative
(variously explained as a reference to Burgess' _A Clockwork Orange_,
or the optimism that comes from the orange color of a sunrise). Which
has staged the following activities:
1) The toilet-paper conspiracy --- a group of Orange
Alternative members went into a town square and began
passing out rolls of toilet paper, ``The white paper
of the white elephant of Polish hygiene''. Their
explanation: under a regime which is unable to provide
the very basics of existence, passing out toilet paper
is a subversive act.
2) The revolution of the elves --- a group of them went into
the town square and passed out red-felt hats, on the
principle that anyone who took a hat would thus be
part of the consipiracy.
``How can you take seriously an interrogator who asks
you, `For what purpose did you take part in an illegal
meeting of elves.'?''
3) Throughout Poland spray painted ``Solidarnosc'' grafitti
have sprouted a circle around the central A.
This yippie-like movement uses political theater to subvert the
system.
