Then we entered the circle of hell reserved for mendacious politicians.
And I observed a man lying at the top of a pyramid of burning United
States flags, and he too was burning, and appeared to be in dire agony.
After observing a while I noticed that while the flags were not consumed
by fire, the man's flesh was so consumed, and his skin got blacker and
more shrivelled as I watched. Eventually demons came by and pronounced
him well-cooked, and hacked off pieces of the charred mass and consumed
them as pork rind substitute. Fresh flesh grew back to replace that
which was consumed, continually renewing the man's torment.
Although the shrieks and moans of the tortured man were deafening, I
endeavored to approach him and ask what his sin had been. He answered:
"I had acceded to the highest office in the land, and had cheerfully
sacrificed all my principles and those of the country in orderer to
achieve my high rank. My most notable perversion was of the flag that
now burns under me. Here I lie to teach others that if you wrap
yourself in the flag you may find yourself set alight."
