Dear Friend in Christ,

Here's good news! You and I have an opportunity to meet in person,
or at least to be together at the same exciting historic occasion,
in Plymouth, Massachusetts on Sunday, August 6th!

On that day Christians from all over New England will gather
together to remember the contributions our Pilgrim Fathers made to
the shaping of America as a nation "with liberty and justice for
all."

The occasion? The hundredth anniversary of the National Monument to
Pilgrim Forefathers where I will appear and speak on August 6th on
"The Pilgrims Significance To America Today." Our TV crew will be
there also, and after they've edited the footage, my address will be
on TV; but I think you'll agree, there's a special satisfaction in
witnessing such an event in person!

Just one century ago, in August of 1889, the people of Plymouth
dedicated this great monument that, more than any other, depicts
America's Christian heritage. At its top is an inspiring statue of
a woman who typifies Faith -- the kind of Christian faith the
Pilgrims had -- with a Bible in one hand and the other reaching
toward Heaven. At the monument's base are handsome statues
representing the Pilgrims' commitment to Christian Morality, Law,
Education and Liberty (based on the conviction that "where the
Spririt of the Lord is, there is Liberty." (II Corinthians 3:17()

In addition to my talk, there will be an
exciting Pilgrim Parade, one of the best
bands in Massachusetts, and one of the great
choirs of New England. Much to enjoy!

I speak at 3:00 PM, but it's a good idea to get to the Forefathers
Monument by 2:00PM to get a seat and enjoy the parade. The monument
is right off Route 44, a block to the North, on Allerton Street just
west of Main Street. I greatly look forward to meeting you in
Plymouth on Sunday, August 6th!

Sincerely in His service,

D. James Kennedy

Modification protection in self-reproducing texts
by Thomas Carom

Abstract:

Sacred texts such as the Bible and the Koran are one of the most
powerful forms of meme-carriers. One reason for their power is that
they can be reproduced without error, whereas oral transmission of
memes always subjects them to some inadvertant degree of modification.
However, the higher fidelity of texts leads to the introduction of
*purposeful* modifications by scribes serving interests other than
those of the text.

In this article we examine certain passages of sacred or
self-reproducing texts that are intended to prevent or discourage this
type of modification, for example this passage from Revelations Chapter
22:

18 I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy
this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add
unto him the plagues that are written in this book: 19 if any man
shall take away from the words of the book of this, God shall take
away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city,
and from the things which are written in this book.

Such passages fulfill a function analogous to DNA-repair mechanisms
that limit mutation rates in biological systems. The memetic repair
system has the advantage of working by means of a threat, and is thus
able to stop mutation before it ever happens.
