DISCOUNT FOR JESUS IS TOO DEVILISH
From the wires of Mother AP yesterday:

PENSACOLA, Fla. (AP) -- Born-again gas station owner Jerry Harrison,
46, is facing six months probation for violating a law barring visual
cluttering with a sign advertising 10 percent discounts to "those
whom Jesus loves."

TEXT {by'-nair-ee}
A binary number is a number written in BASE two. This means
that the digit in each position represents a particular power
of two. In the more common DECIMAL system, powers of ten are
used. Binary numbers are important because of their application
in COMPUTERS. A positive integer is represented in base two by
a string of 0s and 1s, for example, 1101001. Each digit
represents a place value: the first (reading from right to
left) represents the number of units; the second represents the
number of twos; the third, the number of fours (= 2 X 2); the
fourth, the number of eights (= 2 X 2 X 2) and so forth. For
comparison, note that the first four decimal places represent,
respectively, the number of units (10 to the power of 0), tens
(10 to the power of 1), hundreds (10 to the power of 2), and
thousands (10 to the power of 3). Thus
1 (base 2) = 1 (base 10)
10 (base 2) = (1 x 2) + (0 x 1) = 2 (base 10)
11 (base 2) = (1 X 2) + (1 X 1) = 3 (base 10)
100 (base 2) = (1 x 2(2)) + (0 x 2) + (0 x 1)
= 4 (base 10)
1101001 (base 2) = (1 x 2(6)) + (1 x 2(5)) + (0 x 2(4)) +
(1 X 2(3)) + (0 X 2(2)) + (0 X 2) + (1 X 1)
= 105 (base 10)
The arithmetic operations for binary numbers are simple.
For example, consider the addition of 1101001 and 1101110:
11 1
1101001
1101110
--------
11010111
(Note that 1 + 1 = 10 or 0 carry 1.)
Electronic devices lend themselves to the use of binary numbers
because on/off, or go/no-go circuits are involved. In modern
computers and calculators, two-state devices are employed to
represent the binary digits 0 and 1. One of the states
represents 0; the other state represents 1. WILLIAM W. ADAMS
