As I wasn't able to get mail through to the list when I first saw this
article, it's a bit dated. But I've never seen it on here, and it's still
real relevant.
Church Founders Arrested -- Police: Organization ran prostitution ring
Seattle(Seattle _Times_) -- A couple who founded the Ultimate Life
Church in the Puget Sound area and who espoused the virtues of hug ceremonies
and closeness were arrested by King County police on Friday(6/16/89) on
charges of promoting prostitution.
Two arrests also were reported in neighboring Pierce County and at
least one more in Bremerton, Wash., in connection with a four-county
investigation in the case.
The church operated as a front for a large prostitution ring, said
King County police Capt. Jackson Beard.
Police on Friday served search warrants at nine of the church's
buildings and two residences in King, Pierce, Snohomish and Kitsap counties.
Named in the arrest warrants were founders Jay Gearon, 45, and his
wife Joleen, 35, who are being held at the King County Jail here, police said.
The church's headquarters in Bellevue, a Seattle suburb, is a small
building next to a school, Beard said.Other church locations included North
Seattle and Federal Way, Wash.
Beard describes the churches as looking "exactly like a massage
parlor. There's a reception area and two rooms where 'communion' is held."
According to police, "parishioners" visited the church and either paid
dues or a one-time donation. They then partook in a "baptism of pleasure" or
"communion," which was administered by female ministers, Beard said.
That requested donation was $50 to $60, he said.
Beard said the Ultimate Life Church was "a very sophisticated
operation apparently designed to pass itself off as a church."
"They had a strict code of beliefs and such. Of course these weren't
things that are typically found in most Judeo-Christian belief structures,"
Beard said.

What a religion, eh? I think Capt. Beard's never heard
of the free exercise clause. If someone up in the area can get an address for
this bunch, I'll send 'em Alan Dershowitz' address.
