WEST SENECA (AP) - Junior high school students who wore black clothes -
sometimes associated with Satanism and heavy metal music - were prevented
from attending class in this Buffalo suburb, school administrators said.
Between 60 and 65 students at West Seneca West Junior High School were
kept out of school Tuesday because they violated a new policy against
wearing black clothing.
Principal Richard Caputi said the new policy was not specifically in
response to fears about Satanism, but arose from observations made by the
previous principal that more and more children were wearing black clothing
to school.
Good reasoning: if the kids like black clothing, don't let them wear it.
Nothing to do with a fear of Satanism or heavy metal, uh uh.

The Manchester Union Leader is very conservative and also famous
for publishing letters from readers. I think they publish letters
without reading them. Take, for example, this from August 12.
RESEARCH FINDS "EVIDENCE" OF SATANISM
To the Editors: Mayor Emile Beaulieu is right about potential
Satanic messages in the music and lyrics of the heavy metal band
Metallica. Since the night of the concert, I have conducted
exhaustive research and found no less than three substantiations
of the mayor's allegations on the bands four albums.
When the song "Fade to Black" from the "Ride to Lightning" album
is spun backwards at high speed while the listener stands on his
head meditating, the message "Santa is coming to town" can be
heard between the second and third verses. This is an obvious
reference to Satan in that the band misspelled the crucial word,
placing the ever important letter "n" in the middle instead of at
the end. Both are mem dreddes in red, so we can understand
Metallica's confusion.
Even more ominous is the cassette version of the recent "one"
single. When played on s Sony Walkman with the headphones placed
over the eyes instead of the ears, visions of an Iowa chicken farm
conjure into view. Broken eggs are scattered about the hay floor
as the chickens cackle away. Obviously a metaphysical display of
the pagan cult "chicken dance" ritual, popular with hedonists of
Medieval times.
The final Satanic instance I discovered was from the compact disc
of their "Master of Puppets" album. When the disc is placed in a
microwave oven set oh high power for ten minutes, sparks dance
from the metal as the disc begins to melt. Evidently, the
microwave radiation purges the discs of other-worldly influences,
this making them safe for the teenage listener. Unfortunately,
the process also renders them unplayable and is a pontential
health and safety hazard for the concerned parent attempting to
purge the child's compact disc collection.
It seems the mayor is not so ignorant after all.
