Saratoga Springs, NY, Oct 9 (AP) - The American Cancer Society canceled
plans to hold a lavish medieval festival on Friday, which will be the
13th, after loud protests from fundamentalist Christians opposing the
day's evil implications.
Telephone calls from people opposing the mystical implications of some
of the fair's featured events prompted the Cancer Society to change the
festival to a general costume ball, said William Doyle, an organization
volunteer.
"At stake is the reputation of the American Cancer Society," Mr. Doyle
said. "For the greater good we thought we would just accomodate them."
The fair was to feature tarot card and astrology readings.
"It's crazy," said Ann Fisher, a psychic, and the fair's honorary
chairwoman. "It's a misinterpretation of the period of history. We're
just trying to do something good. It's a fund-raiser."
"Tarot card readinfs or fortune-telling or things like that would bring
in spiritual forces that are very dangerous," said Rev. Eric Walton,
pastor of the Clifton Park Center Baptist Church.
Mr. Doyle said some of the protesters also objected to the word
medieval, whose ending sounded "evil."
Mr. Doyle said he was not sure why the Cancer Society event was singled
out since similar functions had been held in the area without complaint.
The ball is to be held on Friday.

About the aliens: Everyone knows that what matters in an extraterrestrial
is not brain size, but the size of the reproductive organs.
I mean, if were going to be invaded by aliens, who *cares* if they
can think? Reducing brain size might be a good argument that these
creatures have a better understanding of the way the universe *really*
works than we do.
