Sect fights `evil' school computers
===================================

Members of the Exclusive Brethren, an austere Christian sect, are pressing
for a meeting with Mr John MacGregor, the Education Secretary, to demand
that their children in state schools be exempt from compulsory teaching
about computers.

The Brethren believe computers are "a scientific imitation which rivals
what God has put into living persons [Revelations 13, verse 13], making
man increasingly independent of God and leading to infidelity."

[ The article goes on to describe the attitudes of the Barnet (North London)
local authority, which sympathizes with the Brethren and is trying to get
an exemption from the government's 1988 national curriculum legislation to
cover this. ]
