Subject: Remember the Situationists! Win Valuable Prizes!
The Boston Institute of Contemporary Art is holding an exhibition of
Situationist Art ("On the Passage of a Few People Through a Rather
Brief Moment in Time: The Situationist International, 1957-1972").
The Situationists were French radicals who played a large part in the
Paris uprisings in 1968, and generated a body of social criticism
around the idea of "Spectacle/Commodity Society". They attacked the
mainstream culture as encouraging a passive observation rather than
participation, and the reduction of culture to a commodity. It is
alleged that they were an important influence on the British punk
scene. They liked to break up and attack art exihibitions (and indeed
some latter-day sits have picketed this one.)
Imagine my surpise when I got a flyer from the ICA encouraging me to
join in order to celebrate the exhibition (and the anniversary of the
French Revolution) with a contest to win one of several fabulous
French prizes! These include: Five pairs of Vuarnet sunglasses, a
Tiffany brooch, and a Vuitton travel bag.
Maybe somebody at the ICA has a sense of humor. Then again, maybe not.
