I haven't got a cure for the "Believe me or something awful will happen
to you" meme, but your posting helped explain some of what I had been going
through (and what I suffer residual effects from still) when I was a child
in my parents Fundamentalist household. Free-floating anxiety, in a word.
Simply getting away from the influence of my parents is not enough, because
one carries their "voices" in ones head. It is to exchange the specific
anxiety of being destroyed by God to the non-specific anxiety of "something
bad happening".
I think one idea would be to mentally and emotionally debunk the idea of the
Destroyer God and, if possible, replace Him with a nurturing-type God.
Fundamentalists are theologically incorrect when they visualize their God
as the Father who will strike his children with lightning if they're not
careful. That's Zeus, as a local Episcopal priest is fond of saying.

Yea, verily. I used to be one of those trapped in the fear-state of the
Fundahooies, but I was saved by the word of "Bob", from whom all blessings
flow -- Praise "Bob"!.
Yes, you too can receive the holy Slack. All you have to do is ask for it.
Do I hear an amen?

Would someone please send SubG digest #306 again (I think that number - was the rant about memes) - it destroyed itself just when it started to get interesting. "Do what you want -- you will anyway." PeterZ
