Subject: The Other Kennedy Conspiracy

I just got my free, unsolicited copy of "Senatorial Privilege: The
Chappaquiddick Cover-up" in the mail today - a 121 page paperback
("the condensed version," it says in fine print). The cover blurb
says:

The Explosive New York Times Best Seller

A young girl accepts a ride with a Senator... ... and turns up dead
the next morning in his car!

Leo Damore writes a damning account [how's that for poetry? -s] of the
nation's most notorious accident, and how Teddy Kennedy, ultimately,
got away with murder.

Mr. Damore had a hard time getting his book in print. Random House
broke its contract to publish after five years and sued the author for
return of their $150,000 advance. None of the other big New York
publishers were interested either because someone with clout was
letting it be known there would be trouble if this book went to press.
Finally a small publishing house took a chance and overnight,
Senatorial Privilege was a best seller on the New York Times Best
Seller list.

There's no mention of the book's actual publisher anywhere, but it
says copyright 1988 by Leo Damore. The accompanying letter starts
"Dear Friend..." and ends

And please -- though we can never bring Mary Jo Kopechne back to
life -- we *can* alert the voters of Massachusetts and the entire
United States to the grisly reality of Chappaquiddick -- *if* you will
help us continue our campaign with a generous contribution today.
Thank you,
Dave Barron,
National Chairman

The enclosed tastefully prepared contribution form, with a logo of the
Jefferson Monument, urges contributions of $10-$100 ("or more!"),
reminding me that "your contribution is tax deductible to the FULL
EXTENT OF THE LAW". Wow, no slacking off here. The address is
