In the February issue of *The Atlantic* there's a short piece about "the
nation's only commerical supplier of execution equipment" that discusses
the technology of electrocution and other forms of capital punishment;
it features a picture of the control panel for the hot seat in a
southern prison, complete with the big "ELECTRIC CHAIR ENERGIZED" light,
the three-position "ELECTRIC CHAIR FAILSAFE" ("OFF/OPERATION/TEST"), and
the "POWER ON" and "COMPUTER ON" switches....

A paper here said something that seemed to indicate that the stuff
inside the banana leaves was something like corn flour for tamales,
which would make it not *quite* as silly as it sounds if the flour is a
whitish powder, but still....
