Subject: The Straight Dope on "Bob"

Dallas Observer readers are treated to weekly doses of Cecil Adams' "Straight
Dope" column. Readers ask questions about obscure or urban-myth shrouded
subjects and Cecil researches them. His answers are also pretty sarcastic
sometimes -- particularly when a reader tries (and fails) to be witty.
This is from last week's:

Several times recently while attending movies I have witnessed an
unusual occurance. When the lights go down, someone in the theatre
shouts "Bob" and "slack". On one occasion, there were answering
shouts from other parts of the theatre. What is the significance
of "Bob" and "slack"? Is this some sort of practical joke designed
to confuse those of us not involved?

-Jim Lippard [Hmmmm... I know this name...]

You're putting me on, right? I thought everybody knew about the
Church of the Subgenius, the invention of an off-the-wall Dallas
filmake named Doug Smith [Ivan Stang]. J.R. "Bob" Dobbs, mythical
geek with a pipe and brain-dead grin, is the church's number one
guru. Sample teaching:"If You Act Like a Dumbshit, They'll Treat
You as an Equal." "Bob" preaches the vitues of "slack," the
SubGenetic equivalent of nirvana, the precise parameters of which
are not quite clear to me nor probably Smith himself. But if it's
a choice between "Bob" and Tammy Faye, et al., I know which way
I'm headed every time.

-Cecil Adams
